ive been wanting to do a build on a savage 10fp in .308 for over a year now. i would like to shoot paper out to maybe 500 yds if i feel like it but also want to use it for hunting whitetail and smaller game. all my friends use .22-250, .243 or .270s on whitetail and i use 6.8 spc so im kinda thinking .308 is a little overkill and i could get away with something smaller. any ideas on a better round choice that i could shoot paper from afar and still hunt with? thanks

+1 on the 260. It's a flat shooter, especially out to 500 yds, and certainly well beyond that also on paper. Mine is a pleasure to shoot. One of my favorite calibers by far. Recoil is nothing, less than the .308. You will not go wrong with something in the 6-6.5mm range (.243-.260). What kind of distances are you looking at taking deer? I personally would opt for at least the 6.5 out to 500 yds on deer sized game. Many a deer has been taken with a .243 though.

Nothing wrong with any of the 308 based rounds. Taken many with 7-08, 260, and 243. Last few years the little 243 pushing 85gr Barnes TSXs has gotten most of the stand time.

260 remington I have it chambered in a model 7. Sweet gun, Short and light. Works well for hunting here. Easy to carry and slip through brush. Flat shooting for long bean field shots.

Nothing wrong with a 308. It will work just fine for what you are wanting. I think 22-250 is marginal for white tail-sized game at extended ranges unless you are shooting heavies from a tight twist barrel. Even then, I think there are better calibers. Don't have any experience with the 260, but I hear it's a great caliber. If I didn't want to shoot my 308, then I would give the 260 or 6.5x47 a good long look.

.260 isn't to bad. I shoot 120grn remington accutips. There 35 a box from midway. And several stores carry them locally. I saw earlier HSM is loading Bergers in 260 now. I may try them and see how well the 7 likes them.

I go with 6.5 creedmoor easy to get HIGH quality factory ammo and its cheaper than the other 6.5mm's ie .260 and 6.5x47. YMMV
