Not in my 'hood, but a PA Dutch bacchanal nonetheless:

Why it's a tradition here:

It was ponhaus to me until I was a teenager. Scrapple is an English-language derivation.

You haven't lived until you've been to a pig butchering. You eat good.

Peas are cooking. I’ll pick some collards in a bit.

I'm not familiar with the tradition in the OP, but in the South it is indeed greens (collards or turnips, either one), black-eyed peas (and preferably in the form of the dish known as Hoppin' John), and ham hocks.

Didn’t know you were close to Lancaster. Man, I’m jealous. Outstanding scrapple there. Man I like scrapple. Don’t read the ingredients though.

Found a big bag of kraut in the frig. Adding kraut to the New Years vittles. Middle boy will be pleased; he eats that stuff like candy.

You got your pork, you got your sauerkraut. I might be able to vet you for safe conduct back and forth to Gettysburg now.

I'd bypass Gettysburg and head strait for D.C.

Is cracklins in the cornbread ok up there? Makes you fat or a little fatter, look away...
