Suppressors "...don't suppress well"

Re: "...don't suppress well"

Nukes,

Here goes another one of these responses that probably gives you a boat load more than you want.

I will speak for the benefit of the FNFAL/LAR. That rig suppresses very well. In fact, with subsonics it is close to air gun and can be accurate as well. The issue folks get confused about is what happens when semi or FA is required. What does that mean? It means that if one turns off the gas at the gas spindle/plug and shoot subsonics, one can get three of the five sources of noise licked. Blast, sonic signature, action noise...all gone. All that is left is operator noise and impact.

The issue is what happens when semi/FA capabilities have to be maintained. There we have some work to do and may be why you are asking your question. For the FNFAL/LAR a favorite route is to buy a grande launcher gas plug and make a choice between two options:

1. Semi/FA <span style="text-decoration: underline">suppressed </span>shooting and gas off shooting.

2. Semi/FA <span style="text-decoration: underline">unsupressed</span> shooting and <span style="text-decoration: underline">suppressed</span> semi/FA shooting.

The choice has to be made because these are two position plugs.

Lets look at choice #1.

Here one can either shoot suppressed or with the rig's gas system turned all the way off. What one does is weld the plug hole shut and redrill to .06/.07. Then one winds the gas adjust all the way down and slowly open it up until the rig cycles perfectly. Tower Down = semi/FA suppressed shooting. Tower Up = Manual Bolt, no action noise.

Now #2, unsupressed semi/FA or suppressed semi/FA.

Leave the original hole as is....drill a new hole in the gas off position to .06/.07 and adjust tune to proper cycle. Note: Sometimes gas adjustment between positions is required.

Note, even with the grenade Launcher gas plug up, the scope will not see the range tower and it serves as a great reminder that either:

#1, gas is off

or

#2, gas is set for suppression only.

Hope that helps....

Getting much better than this now, but it is the only pic I have.

Re: "...don't suppress well"

Thank you for that! Judging from the completeness of your answer, I suspect you agree that on few subjects can there be "too much information."

Very nice to see that you have a 50.00 and my 2.5MOA rifle envies your accuracy.

I like your "drill a new hole in the gas off position" suggestion. I will run up that idea with our local FALsmith. A timely idea since I really do need to do something about that 2.5MOA embarrassment.

I am also amused that I assumed, but never considered, "operator noise" as part of the equation

May I inquire whose can and adapter you are using?

Re: "...don't suppress well"

The TL, DR version of the answer is that some guns (like the AK, Steyr AUG, M14, etc.) vent high pressure gas to the atmosphere as part of their operating cycle, which increases the noise.

Re: "...don't suppress well"

The video above is shooting subsonics. We always listen for supersonic flight signature in the surround in videos like this. When we don't here it, we have to set the video aside as a non-starter for seeing if the rig can be suppress HV or if the can is worth a piss.

Finish the video and click on the upper right one that is presented on the end menu. Hear the SS signature in the surround? HV rounds and a better sense (all these vids suck at good presentation) of suppression results for that can (fair.)

Re: "...don't suppress well"

My AK (WASR) does not suppress well. The gas vent is noisy all by itself, it does not like to feed round nose bullets and accuracy is poor with 150 grain subsonics. I have heard of others who like their suppressed AK's though.
