I did some shooting this morning, and came away a little bit puzzled. I am shooting a Rem 700 SPS Tactical, 20" 1/12 barrel. The scope is a 6.5-20x44 Vortex Viper, with 1/4 MOA adjustments. I was shooting my reloads with Hornady 168 gr. HPBT Match and 175 gr. SMK's. I had one target set at 289 yards, and one at 698. Distances were found with the GPS on my phone.
I am using the Shooter ballistic app on my Droid, and have been working on getting it dialed in with my loads since I don't have a chrono to find velocities.
First I shot at the 289 yard target. For the 175 gr. SMK's I plugged 289 yd into Shooter and it said to come up 16 clicks. I dialed up 16 and drilled the target dead center. I kept that setting and shot 7 more and they were all right where they should be.
Then I moved out to the 698 yd target. I put that into Shooter and it spit out +57 clicks, or +14.2 MOA. I dialed that in and hit the ground in front of the target. Long story short, I ended up using 88 clicks, or 22 MOA to put me on the target. Now I'm trying to figure out why there is such a difference.
Load data:
2x Fired Win Brass, neck sized
CCI 200 primers
44.7 gr. RL-15
175 grain Sierra Match King
2.835" COAL
Location:
4300' ASL
60*
Sunny and no wind
This is what I have entered into Shooter for the load:
Bullet Dia: 0.308
Weight: 175gr
Bullet Length: 1.24"
Muzzle Velocity: 2600 fps
MV Variation: 15.0
Powder Temp: 65* F
Drag Model: G7
Zeroed @ 100 Yards
Any Ideas? I used google earth when I got home and double checked my distances and they were within 15 yards of what I found with my phone while I was out there.
