DPMS 308/260 "L" and "H" models - Anyone have/try?

Does anyone have or have tried one of the DPMS "L" (light) or "H" (heavy) models they offer? I can't find any local and was just wondering how they felt/shot. If you liked it out of the box or felt it needed upgrades, other than the trigger.

Thanks,
Hawk

I have a 20" 260H and I've known quite a few that own/owned the 308 with the 24" barrels.
They all seem to perform better than I ever would have guessed, straight from DPMS.
The triggers are my only complaint, however a good shooter will overcome that limitation with little difficulty.
Actually if you learn on the factory trigger, and become proficient, you will likely develop good trigger mechanics because of it.
Other than that, sub MOA with the right ammunition is very normal.
I think they are a bargain for what you get.

As far as feel, that is subjective and has many variables.

Recoil seems softer and lasts longer than on a bolt gun.
If money is an issue, these are really hard to beat.
I own one, and I can buy whatever I want.

Thanks Hamilton. Can I ask how the "H" model handles? I'm trying to decide if I go DPMS to go with the heavier or lighter model and how recoil is and manuverability (front end heavy, or balanced, etc)

I have the 260H and it isn't light. The JP handguard really helped handling. I haven't tried the L, but my H weighs a lot less than a buddy's 24" 308.

I have a 24" LR308 and I must be dumb as a box of rocks. I don't see a H or a L anywhere on paperwork. It is heavy as hell if that helps any and yes it is a great shooter but the trigger job is a must. According to the box and paper work it weighs about 12 pounds stripped. Mine has a Millett LRS, Bi-pod and soon will have a new stock but now it has the A2 on it.

Ok well after looking around on their website I guess the 24" is the Heavy and I am just a dumb a$$.

I'd go with the H.
The extra barrel rigidity helps accuracy and builds up heat much slower.
Hot barrels usually lose accuracy but the biggest reason is that heat mirage will become an issue right away with the L version.
I can shoot around 20 rounds in a string before mirage really becomes an issue.
Go with a shorter barrel </= 20"
They become pigs otherwise.
My rifle with: Leupold mark-4 3.5-10x40mm, larue 1.5 mount, Harris short bi-pod, and an empty 10 round magazine is 12.4 lbs.

Not too bad.
Weight builds quickly on these things.

Mine has a muzzle break and the recoil is so mild that I can even spot impacts at close ranges like 200-300 yards.
With the 308, and no break, spotting impacts at those ranges becomes difficult because the rifle is still in mid-hop when the impact occurs.
The recoil with either is light.

If not being front heavy, and being easy to handle are big concerns, get a 308 with a heavy 16" barrel.
John Hollinger makes a great one on a Wilson blank for like $350.
You can still get out to 900 yards with that set-up.
