For a company that touts itself as being a major AR player, this is pretty sloppy work in anyone's book. I'm guessing that when they send a rifle out, it's assumed that the owner won't be taking it apart for upgrades.
The scratches are from me sliding the GB on and off trying to determine the set screw spacing. All of that will be buffed out.

Does anyone know what set screw spacing DPMS uses on their gas blocks. I've tried to measure it with calipers and all I can determine is that is is something shorter than .400".

This was just an upper, not a complete rifle, but point well taken. I'll shoot it and it it doesn't make the cut, I'll replace components starting with the barrel. I'm building a dedicated lower for it.

Buy the gas block of your choice, re-dimple, enjoy! Or get yourself a clamp on block. I have a lightly used Daniel Defense in .750" I'm never going to use I'd give you free if you'd pay for shipping if you want it. Also have a rifle length tube that I'd throw in.

Thanks for the offer, but the journal is .875". I'm going to use a lo-profile gas block(have to) but I need one with set screw spacing that is large enough so that when I dimple the GB, the dimple will be away from the existing dimple so the set screw does not try to go to the wrong dimple. My other option is to just go with one set screw, but two is better.

The dimples are very sloppy. It doesn't affect the performance of the barrel, but it should still be a lot cleaner. I personally would not turn out work that looked like that. YMMV.

DPMS is not a major player.
But whats the problem?
The barrel has a few... scratches... on the surface...

I've got a DPMS lr308 that I have a gripe about. It's heavy. Other than that, I'm happy. It goes bang every time and stacks fgmm on top of each other. A shooter, but not a run n gunner...

And.............have you contacted DPMS to discuss with them and possibly give them an opportunity to make it right ?

Or, are you just venting here, trashing a manufacturer without extending them that courtesy ?

I have no dog in the hunt, don't own anything DPMS, probably never will and for all intents and purposes, don't care.

Conversely, this shit is getting old. Way too many people doing this nowadays.

Call the manufacturer and try to work with them. If they tell you to pound sand, then come back and trash them to your hearts desire (or not).

Sorry, didn't mean to get your panties in a bunch.

I really have no idea what you are even saying. So you don't like the dimpling job? If you aren't going to use reuse the same gas block then it really doesn't matter.

It is an AR, not a LEGO set....... not all parts gk together.

I also have an early DPMS lr308. It’s a total pig, but stacks ‘em in and is responsible for me getting sucked into Long Range shooting years ago. I would never use it for a match but it is always a pleasure to shoot, since I replaced the trigger first thing. Their triggers are duty triggers and are poor, but they work no matter what ammo you throw in there and reward you if you use good ammo.

I'm not going to reuse the gas block. That's my issue. I'm replacing the float tube with a rail handguard and have to use a lo-profile GB. I either have to use a gas block with the same set screw spacing or one with spacing far enough apart that I can do a new forward dimple that does not try to hit the unused dimple. Many of the LP gas blocks use .400" spacing or wider and this one is something less than that, I can't determine exactly what it is. I could make a .450" work, but again, I have not found a .875" with .500" set screw spacing. A clamp-on would work if there is a lo-profile version, but I havn't run across one of those yet either..

All you need to do is this:

1 - get whatever gss block you need
2 - put it on
3 - align it
4 - put on the rear set screw into the dimple
5 - go shoot it.

You don't need both set screws in a dimple to have it secure.
