Hi all, I'm a bit new to rifles (shot, never owned). I recently purchased a DPMS LRT-SASS .308. I was looking at NXS 3.5-15x50 at first but researched a bit more and think the F1 (FFP) version is more to my liking. I have a couple questions...

Where do you guys usually order Nightforce products? I've been looking at cstatical.
http://www.cstactical.com/Store/OPTICS/R...s-1-center.html

Will the rings that come with the F1 work with the SASS? I'd like to keep the backup sights on.

Thanks for the help.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

CSTactical is a good place to order. And no the 1" height rings wont work with a flat top AR series. You will need higher. You can always sell the rings and buy a higher set or a Larue mount.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Mikey is good to go, the rings that come with the NF wont work on a regular flat top reciever ... you will need a riser to use the rings or a dedicated setup like the LT-104 ( http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=30 )

depending on the backup sights they might not fit under the scope... question is why have back up irons... you have a platform for distance shooting and you are putting a large scope on your rifle ... if you were running a setup where you would have to do CQB etc etc then sure but why ... i do not know you occupation or nessecity but bolt rifles do not have back up irons neither should your setup

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not sure why I cared about the backup sights... but you're absolutely right. 4thSeal, that mount was one of the ones I was looking at previously as I've seen it mentioned quite a bit.

I read the optics sticky thread with reference to high end scopes. I checked out USO's selection and was surprised. I thought they were significantly higher priced and were not FFP (they're all FFP, correct?). I'm currently looking into their setups.

Is there any reason extra reach is bad? I'm looking at the SN-3 3.2-17x and the 3.8-33x. Also not positive what size objective to go with; 44mm or 58mm. 58mm seems rather big to me, opinions?

Thanks

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Nightforce, USO, Premier, S&B all good choices ... if that is your price range...

there are a lot of things to consider ... distance your shooting ... etc ... that weapon platform is good for 800 - 1k ... 33x will produce a lot of mirage ... but it can be good for spotting shots ... size of the scope vs weight / mobility etc... planning on just taking it to the range its all good... nothing you cant do with a 17x that you cant do with a 33x ...

3-15x50 Premier, 4-16x50 SB, 3-15x50 NF, 3.2-17 x 44 USO all good ...

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Oops, that was a typo. I meant SN-3 3.8-22x.

I guess what I'm asking is, will there be a difference at 10 magnification between the 17x and 22x scopes? I come from a photography background where there are differences and is why I ask these questions.

Do you think 58mm objective is a bit big for a tactical rifle?

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

There shouldn't be a difference, but some have better resolutions than others. The best thing you could do is find a local shooting range that has long range competitions and go there during one. Check out what people are using and look through them.

If you can't do that I would go with the Nightforce. The model you are talking about (5-15 FFP) seems to be very popular.

FWIW I have a dpms sass upper on a lower I put together myself and I am using a 10X super sniper but I would go with a 5.5-22X nightforce if I had the dough.

They do look good on a precision rig. Not a SASS, Wilson Combat with Larue LT-104:

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Rico, In your opinion, do you would you go with 44mm or 58mm objective (on a USO)? I'm having a hard time deciding as I don't know how much of a difference there is between the two. By time I hit the range after work it might be getting a bit darker...

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Samurai,I just got a DPMS SASS two weeks ago and put a Falcon Menace 4-14X44 scope on it with a Larue LT-158 mount. I got advice hear on the hide about the LT-158 having 10 MOA built in and called Larue and ask about the two mounts. They also recommended the LT-158. I really like the look of the 44 obj but they may be because I can't afford a NF or USO.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Execellent, thanks Wildbill. I'll definitely talk with LaRue before purchasing. I'm thinking I'll be getting a 44mm objective with the more I read.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

I have an AR10 with Badger handguard - so it has a top rail that is level with the upper receiver - that I mounted a Nightforce F1 on with Nightforce's 1.375" Unimount and sits just about perfect for me, it allows for Butler Creek caps and provides a 20 MOA cant.

The smaller Unimount - 1.125" - will sit too low for the 50mm objective lens but works with a 40mm lens.

I couldn't be happier with the scope or the mount.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

As you are planning on a lot of low light shooting, the larger OL would probably help you out. I just ordered a new NXS and went with the 56mm simply because I have the room for the extra 3mm all the way around on my Rem 5R. But 50mm vs. 56mm is different than 44mm vs 58mm.

I think you'll be happy with either.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Rico, I was a bit worried by time I got to the range after work I wouldn't have much shooting time... but I don't think it will matter that much as I'm sure it will be closing by time I start losing light. There is a big difference between the 44 and 58mm objectives, like you said... especially on a tactical rifle. After reading around a bit, I don't think it will make a huge difference for what I'm looking for. Especially considering the quality of scope I'm buying. Thanks for the input.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

I remove the rear sight on my SASS and mount it nut-to-butt behind the front sight. It's out of the way and a quick transition to irons if you need them.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

I called and talked to Becky at USO today. She said it was a 20 week wait for the SN-3 3.8-22x. Got on the topic of Midway selling some of their scopes and they have the SN-3 3.2-17x in stock. Aside from the lack focal range and the red illumination instead of green, I pretty much got what I wanted!

I also ordered the LT-158 from LaRue.

Getting pretty excited that it's all coming together now!

I have. It gets me on paper at 100 yards. Takes only a few shots to zero from there.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Wow, You are gonna have to post some pic's when you get it all together. I wish I had the money to start out with a USO and SASS, when I started.

I cant talk bad about my first rig, but Nikon is not a USO and a Colt M4 is not a SASS. :0

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

Thanks for the input Ranger.

Grimm, I've been wanting a SASS forever and finally had the money. As for the scope, I was planning on a $900 Zeiss... then a NF... then ended up with the USO. Now I need a decent case to carry it around in and a few thousand rounds...

Red illumination is FAR better than green.

That is a very nice setup you have going, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Re: DPMS LRT-SASS and NF F1

BCP, why do you say red is better? I remember reading something about how green had better visibility... don't remember where it was or what the reliability of the site is. It was quite some time ago. To me red makes more sense... I just liked the green better.

I picked up the SASS yesterday. Haven't shot it yet, but I'm very happy with the fit and finish of it. Getting the scope tomorrow, too bad the LT-158 mount is back-ordered for two weeks.
