Hey guys

I bought the DPMS SASS, It shoots amazing first off. Tho I notice when I eject a round that wasnt fired the primer has a small divot in it from what appears to be the firing pin. I would assume this is not correct function. The round never get struck hard enough to fire since I didnt pull the trigger and the round functions fine if I put it back in and squeeze it off. I would just think that if the bolt is slamming the round into the chamber and the firing pin is just slightly hitting the primer that cant be good for the firing pin over time. Plus there is always the question will it ever hit hard enough to actually have a "miss fire" and send a round when im not intending for it to be sent?

Thanks Bitter

Re: DPMs SASS question/ issue???

It happens with pretty much all AR's. The firing pin is free to move within the bolt/carrier and when a round is chambered, it will lightly hit the primer. It won't harm anything. If you're not comfortable with it, the general rule is to not charge the weapon until ready to use it. Welcome to AR's!

+1. This is normal, and nothing to worry about. Some say that it is not a good idea to repeatedly chamber the same round over and over (many times) though. That said, I have never personally heard of a round going off unexpectedly as a result of doing so.

Thanks much guys! I appreciate it...my last bushmaster never did it hence why I asked. But I just wanted to double check with you guys since there there is a wealth of knowledge on this site!

Re: DPMs SASS question/ issue???

In the case of rifles like the AR-15/AR-10, etc....they all have free floating firing pins. Because of this, the inertia of the firing pin carries it forward slightly when a round is chambered and it strikes the primer as the bolt closes. This almost always results in a small dimple in the primer and leave a small indent. Most of the time, it is NOTHING to worry about unless the dimple is getting deep into the primer (if you have any pics of the round in question or other rounds you have chambered but not fired, it might help). If you are using commercial 223/5.56 ammo, they usually have somewhat softer/thinner primer cups than military ammo and the dimple way appear worse than with mil surplus ammo.

If the dimple is getting deep into the primer, you could have an out-of-spec firing pin or their could be some debris in the firing pin channel causing the pin to protrude more than it should.

The rule of thumb is that you shouldn't rechamber an unfired round more than 3x as each time increases the likelihood of a slamfire due to repeated dimples on the round's primer. If you chamber and clear your rifle on a regular basis, make sure you change out the top round so that you don't rechamber the same round more than a few times.

This also reinforces the premise that you should always keep your rifle pointed in a safe/clear direction when chambering a round.

Re: DPMs SASS question/ issue???

Thanks ORD I will post pics of the round but from what all of you guys are saying it sounds like a normal dimple. I use my SASS for yote hunting, so I do chamber and unload the rounds but I will make sure to change out rounds just to be extra safe. Though from what it sounds like I dont need to worry as long as like you said I follow standard weapon safety. Just means When the rounds are chambered a few times...I can go to the range to get some of those rounds downrange...just more practice!!
