PRS Talk Dual Prs rifles? Same? Different?

So just seeing what others are doing. I have a 6GT Prs rifle and I recently picked up another action to go along with a previous 6.5cm barrel I was using. For those that have two Prs rifles. Do you set them up the exact same or do you set them up differently? Different chassis/stocks, optics etc.

Or the other option is if you have two precision rifles and they are different; is one a prs and one a nrl or what purposes?

I tried to match my trainer and centerfire as much as I could, scopes get swapped around so that doesnt match and barrels are not exact but they are close enough the feel is the same. Nice thing is you can swap parts back and forth if needed.

Im hoping to someday get a second precision rifle. One will due for now. But when that day comes- I don’t see the reason to have two Ferraris in the garage… especially if they are going to be running on the same track.

I have a PRS 6.5 and an NRL Light 6.5. I like them to be setup pretty much the same. Light gun is in an XLR Element with a razor LHT and PRS is in an XLR Envy with a Gen 3 razor. I am running the Gen 3 in a little taller mount, and I haven’t got around to raising the LHT yet.

I go back and forth. Yeah would be cool to have exact copies but also would be nice to try other things. I’m running and Acc elite right now. Could be cool to try a Foundation or Manners.

I purposely made my 22prs as similar ( and as heavy) as possible to the dasher. Only thing different is sg level vs mdt.

for my twins I have:
Same caliber
Same gunsmith
Same reamer
Same barrel ( maker, length and profile)
Same muzzle brake
Same rings and scope
Same trigger
Different actions
Same chassis, was different but preferred to align

Has not happened to me, but ive saw a couple people travel to a 2day event and had to cut it short because of a gun malfunction....Those people were not going to win the match by any means but basically spent a pretty good amount of money for the weekend to be there.

Two is one, one is none. When I go to a class I bring two rifles in the same cartridge.

This was my plan. I’ve got a Zeus in an Acc elite shooting 6gt and another Zeus with a 6.5cm barrel. Would like to try a foundation maybe but having an elite and a foundation seems very different for the purposes.

I like them both equally.

I say get two different setups, you’ll have fun. You can only shoot one gun at a time. You’ll probably learn some stuff shooting two different rifles too.

I tried to make mine as identical as possible and then, MPA went on and upgraded the chassis. And I have to say the upgrade is a real upgrade,

As barrels wear out I am going back and forth as to future plans. My 12 pound Vudoo is really nice to shoot especially moving from prop to prop. So, I may rebuild one to the Sportsman division and put a serious brake on it. It will involve a different chassis and possibly a different scope and not sure what barrel profile will work, but, Brenda is shooting our RPR in 6.5 so that part is set.

So, to the OP’s question. No matter how hard I try it seems always one rilfe needs a different change of ammo regardless of caliber, so , keeping two identical is a challenge, BUT, if one is the spare for the other, each needs to be fairly close in chassis/stock setup, scope setup and possibly the same caliber.

That’s where it’s heading. However a 13 pound 6.5 is starting to make a lot of sense. My doctor keeps reminding me that at my age, muscle loss is a real issue and when I moved my drill press a few months ago, I found that moving it to a new table had become a two person job. 15 years ago, I had no issue putting it on the table I built for it by myself. If you can see where I’m going, I want to continue both cycling and PRS shooting well into my 80’s and I’m only three years short of the 80 mark.

I wouldn’t say that it’s weird, it just take a minute to get used to. Just apply the fundamentals and you’ll be fine.

Seems to be the going trend among my buddies. Guy had a Mpa, got a centurion and now has two samsons.

They are pretty nice, but i think by far the heaviest stock out of the box. Samson fully rigged out im at like 28.5# makes for a long day if youre not prepared. My two other centurions weight around 24-25# with the same setup. Ive got some titanium in my face and the best thing is that there is not vibration like a chassis.

I have two, Both are in Foundation Stocks. Both have Tangentst, Reticles are different. Two different actions. Both same trigger set the same. One is a 6 dasher, the other is a 25x47. One has a TBAC Magnus K RR, the other has a 419 Maverick.

You have 25 years on me, but I am feeling the same. So far I can still do the same stuff, but it sure it’s as effortless as it was 20, or even 10 years ago. My 12# 6.5 is much nicer to carry around.

I’m an enforcer in the Midpack Mafia, #leftedge4lyf, so what I might do if I were a top end shooter vs. what I do now might be different. I have 3 PRS rifles and a 4th half done now, and have swapped around a few optics, stocks, chassis’, and triggers among all of them, and can shoot the same score with any of them - different weights, different cartridges, different optics, different actions. Would I score higher if all of them were the same? Eh, probably not. Shooting any of them more would help me more than having the same reticle on all of them.

I do keep a 6 creed (which next barrel will be a 25creed) for certain matches (more prone and more wind) along side a 6 Dasher as my primary rifle. I do like having multiple rifles for that purpose. I wouldn’t want to carry a 25+ pound rifle for every match, but it’s largely necessary for soaking down recoil of the larger caliber, larger case rounds. So that’s one example of advantages from having 2 different rifles rather than 2 identical rifles.

TBH I have more or less two exact twins, the only big difference I notice is in the magazines. I have a AICS TL3 and an AW ARC CDG, and I regret not having gone AW with both, DSDF mags are so much better across the board.
I can shoot equally good ( or bad, being also part of MIdpack Mafia) with an ACC Elite or a Vision Pro, and I settled over Zeiss S3 essentially due to the fact of my old eyes like that glass and the thick reticle. I simply don't train enough so I shoot always the second day better than the first. Just do a three days match were just the last counts, and I'll be golden

For me Toyota Camrys are probably a better comparison but I see multiple reasons to run two of the same rifle. I have two of the same action and two similar chassis from the same manufacturer along with the same type of reticle in both scopes, same type of bipods, same type of rangefinders, and I have used them both for matches and hunting.

To me having the same ergonomics including bolt manipulation, safety, trigger weight, mag release, etc. makes switching from one rifle to another that much easier. Having two of the same rifle means having a complete spare set of parts should something happen to one. My scope rails, extra barrels, chassis and chassis accessories like arca rails, spigots, and cheekpieces can all be used with both rifles in the event one of them becomes broken or needs servicing.

They are the same caliber as well so again same reloading tools and components, data cards, etc.

Right now I have my comp rifle and my testbed rifle. Some day I’ll have it figured out and have 2 identical rifles. Both are in mdt elites. But the test bed has an outlier 6.5 1.2 straight. I couldn’t pass up the deal last year. The comp has bartlein mtu 6 dasher. 6 is #19 and 6.5 #21. 6 has Khales 328 6.5 Burris xtr2. Someday I’ll have another Khales and set them up the same.

Even larger update. I now have a 5 month old. I don’t need 2 Prs rifles and can’t shoot enough to justify it. I went back to 6.5cm only shooting 153’s. It’s more fun.

Ya i have a 2.5 and a 3 month old.
I was bouncing back and fourth between 6.5cm, 25x and 6 dasher. I can't keep up, and have been shooting dasher 99% of the time. Pretty much benched everything else except the 6cm hunting rig.

I have 1 dasher that i use just for comp and 1 identical rig for practice. Pretty similar load in both of them.

I’ve toyed with the idea of making a twin of my current rig (just to have a back-up), but in the end I’ve just ended up with boxes of components and extra barrels… sort of the “beware the man with one gun” mantra or something, I like to train with the exact same rig I’ll run in matches.

That said… while I play Fender’s 98% of the time, change is the spice of life as they say, so it’s fun to play a Gibson or something now and again too.

If I was going to build another rifle, I’d probably use it as a test bed for different cartridges and stocks/chassis just to see if there’s things I might dig even more besides what I’m used to. YMMV.

Its nice to not have to rush home from a match and start cleaning/loading for next weekend. Just grab ammo of shelf and other rifle thats ready to go. Same with .223 gun. Go practice for cheap and saves expensive reloading components and time.

My match gun is 6 GT and i have my practice rifle setup the same but in 6.5 creed as i have an unlimited supply of once fired brass . Also have 22 trainer set up the same. All MDT chassis

My story is a bit of a long one. Had an MPA production in 6.5 creedmoor. It was shooting great but as the round count was passing 1800, I felt it needed to have a new barrel. So, I ordered a 6GT barrel. Then this

My wife and son were blasting away at an IPSC at 100 yards with his M1 carbine and M1 battle rifle. I was spotting for them using my 6.5’s scope. I kept looking at the center hole in the steel. Basically less than a half inch. So, I set the scope to “0”, loaded a round and as you can see, skidded the bullet though the hole. (The target was downhill). With that shot, I knew that barrel had plenty of life left in it.

So, I called MPA and asked them to put that on a rifle identical to what I was currently shooting. Well they didn’t. They upgraded the BA chassis to an ES chassis. And, they don’t adjust the same. Now this is not a complaint, as I much prefer the seemingly slight differences in the ES chassis. But they are not identical. No real issues. As said, very happy with the upgrade. So, as time went on, I did rebarrel the first rifle in GT. Now, as that barrel is getting a bit long in the tooth, I am probably going to rebarrel it back to 6.5 CM. The ES chassised rifle is shooting its second barrel (by Proof, chambered and threaded by Brian Allen of ATeam) and getting along just fine, being the rifle I use when I shoot centerfire matches.

Still this one shot, changed everything. Then, the medical event that brought on my name change has led to this,

None are exactly similar, but sooner than later, the rifle I started out with is going to become either by conversion or by complete sale, a Sportsman weight rifle, mimicking the Vudoo above. 77 next Wednesday, and a 12.5 pound rifle is a lot easier to shoot prs than a 19+ pound rifle. So, don’t care about the class, but the weight makes sense these days.
