Will there be any harm to the KMW hardware if I tighten the clamp screw enough so it can't slip when used without the E clip? I've always set it on the e clip and then locked it down.
No, It's a very robust clamp. The e clip helps after removing the CP for cleaning, if you do such a thing, to put the CP back to your preferred height.
Meaning if you put a low torque on it so you could adjust the cheek rest without a tool? That’s fine, you’re not going to wear those shafts or bores out. Loctite the screw so it doesn’t loosen.
The E-clip is simply a "bookmark" to act as a return stop. It is meant to allow returning the cheek piece to the exact same height setting after removing for bore cleaning, etc. It is not meant to be load bearing but is certainly capable of it in the event your clamp body was not tightened.
The clamp body allows about 1 inch of length with 340 degree contact on each of the two cheek piece columns. The hardware is very capable of holding the cheek piece is position without the E-clip in place. In the early days Gimellie or another buddy did this, stood on the cheek piece and nothing moved.
**DO NOT tighten the clamp body when the cheek rest is fully removed. It could be possible to tighten the crossbolt enough to squeeze the clamp body past the material's elasticity limits. This would not break or crack the clamp body but could certainly result in the holes being too small to insert the columns back into.
Thanks Terry, I'm having an A6 inlet for your Loggerhead hardware and Mk-1 DBM. I've used the Loggerhead acp for a long time and always used the e clips as a hard stop and adjusted the height with them.
A few reasons
I figure he's busy and would prefer not to take time out of his day to answer my dumb question.
I've already asked him a bunch of dumb questions directly and thought maybe I should stop bothering him. Besides, if someone else has his hardware and has questions about it, they might find this thread as well as some others and get their question answered without the need to call or email.
