Gunsmithing Dumb re-barrel question R700P

Well i managed to get the price of a practically new R700P 18" down to $525 and im now scrambling to see which way to go in terms of barrels.

The rifle im building is a target rifle. Having a 18" gun does not make much sense to me since this is not a duty gun, i will not be carrying this around.

Still $525 for a R700P in "like new" conditions is hard to refuse no matter the barrel length.

That said, a while ago i stumbled upon a R700P 26" barrel sale going on right now at Tac Ops here.

Is it a wise move to buy the 18" gun and have it re-barreled to a 26"? How much work goes into swaping the barrels since they are both factory genuine units?
Do i have to run the gun through the whole re-barreling process as if this was a third party match barrel?

Remember i come from ARs where standard (non-match) barrel swaps are no big deal.

I will appreciate any input you submit.

Thanks guys.

That barrel fit could be hit of miss , chances are it wont just screw on and line up correctly and headspace properly. So $525 for the rifle $110 for the barrel plus the charges to properly fit the barrel I would think youre into it for at least $750 plus at this point.

So, would it be wiser just to buy the 18" gun at $525 and then when time comes to go long slap a real match stick with proper fitting?

I mean, those barrels are so damn cheap and the rifle deal is so darn good, i just don't want to miss out!!

Thanks guys.

When you say "real barrel", who are the usual suspects for a target 600-800yd shooter that will mostly see commercial ammo.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks

I was thinking the same thing when I rebarrelled my rifle to a 260.. Found a good deal on a used one but was suggested by two gunsmith to have a new barrel. Its difficult for them to tell if the barrel will fit properly for my action.

The smart thing to do is buy the rifle and shoot it until you have enough money to purchase a match barrel. Look into Bartlien, Rock, Broughton to name a few. I put a Bartlien MTU barrel on the 260 Im building. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet so I can't tell you how well it is. They have a great reputation of making outstanding barrels so I should not have any complaints.

I think im set on the 18" R700P, the only thing that keeps bugging me it's the loss of velosity from 18" vs. 26" and the fact that this will be a 600+ yd gun.

I've seen 1000Yrd consecutive hits with a 16" 308. Your 18" at shorter distances will do just fine. Shoot it till it is shot out (i posted in your other thread too btw, nothing special)
