Ear Protection

What is the minimum hearing protection that should be used when shooting? I have clear armor ear muffs that are 34db and they work great but are bulky. I bought some Impact Sport muffs that seem more shooting oriented but the db reduction is only 22. Is this safe?

You should at minimum have a set of foamies in.
