Easily Distracted

I’m too easily distracted…

I keep an envelope in my gun safe where I stash $ from the occasional side job, or extra coke money at the end of the week. The envelope of secret cash is called the “Good-Guy Fund”. Well, having survived the holidays, and in the spirit of starting out the new-year right, I tucked my GGF envelope in my coat pocket and set out for the local Cabela’s. (I had some points to possibly spend as well).

I started with the intent of getting new rimfire so as to be a little more competitive in the monthly matches. Probably a Savage MkII with a laminate stock, or maybe even a CZ-452 if everything works out just right.

One of my neighbors works there, at the gun counter, and since there wasn’t a line-up, I walked over to him for help. He is a competitive shooter, very knowledgeable, and a heck of a nice guy. Being a good salesman, he would never dispute a customer’s choice for a purchase, but he does have a certain way of presenting “other options”. Soon we were at the other end of the counter, and I was fondling a single shot rifle that will launch projectiles at about the same velocity as 22LR. However, a single hole is somewhat larger than my better 10-shot groups with rimfire.

Surely I’ll get in a few rimfire monthly matches, but they will be shot with my Model Five Remington, as I didn’t get a new 22LR. Ended up with a Sharps replica in 45-70; I’m told one of the better bullet lubes for my new rifle is the same mutton-tallow and bees wax blend that Eley uses.

Hmm… Lubed lead bullets, velocities between 900 and 1350, thin straight-walled rimmed case, kind of dirty powder… Maybe I wasn’t that far off after all?

Nothing wrong with that. I would love to have one of those myself. Now if you can get as good with your's, or at least nearly as good, as Quigley was...lol. I think his was a 45-110.

Re: Easily Distracted

Didn't spend enough time at the .22 rack to look close enough for prices... Definately would've been cheaper! LOL

No pics until it's at the range being fired, - just superstitious that way;)

Couple of guys here at work have Sharps in 45-70; I watched one of them a couple of years back swing a 10 inch gong five for five at I think 510 yards. - Authentic black powder loads to boot! I could barely see the target - of course it was easier to see when he had it swinging. And boy did that big old bullet make it ring!
