I have a chance to get a decent deal on some optics that have been cerakoted. The problem is that it appears that power ring and illumination dial were also coated...making it impossible to know where you are at for range estimation. It is a SFP so using the power ring to judge distance/estimate range will be a problem. I'd like to put the scope back to the original black. Any suggestions short of sand blasting?

Re: Easy Cerakote Removal?

That doesn't help with me being able to read the magnification ring. I wonder if it is possible to mask off the scope and just blast the ring and not destroy whatever they used to mark the magnification settings.

If you can still see the inscriptions, you could paint the numerals. If not, you could sure try to blast just the power ring. Most likely it would have been painted with the air cure Cerakote. It is a little easier to remove than the bake on. I've blasted a Burris scope that was painted with AlumaHyde II. I painted it matte black. It came out OK.

This is why I don't understand why people paint their stuff with something other than krylon. If you paint it with something more permanent, it's going to kill your abilities to resell.
