A lot of the packs are available in a heavy nylon cloth or a much lighter polyester cloth with camo. Can anyone compare the wear characteristics of each?

The correct info you need is . 100% Nylon fabric material is manufactured in all flavors of Camo Patterns . along with 100% Nylon solid colors .

OK more awake running around and doing my days BS and work, and not 01.30 am from the last post I put up...so will give you better detailed answer .
What you are asking beside the fact that there is no difference between Camo and solid colors in Nylon . that that the biggest difference between 'wear characteristics ' on Nylon Vs Polyesters besides Nylons have stronger abrasion resistance . Polyester is going to handle UV damage way better than Nylon , and Poly. will be better against UV color fading So polyester is used in (example) in outdoor outdoor items like Awnings, furniture etc . Poly. has it place and it's strong points . The Sun is a bitch for added wear on everything it comes in contact with for long term .
BUT .. the need for structural strength of materials trumps UV resistance for your Pack .You want to purchase a Pack that is primarily Nylon .Nylon is the better Quality, Your manufacturers do Pay-$ more for Nylon fabrics by the Yard or Roll than Poly. materials .
Also try to get a good 1000 Denier weight nylon weave (camo or solid color) for your Packs 'outer shell '. it will last years past a lighter weight 500 Den. and also 1000 Den. will keep the backside of the fabrics Urethane coating lasting years longer, and that's better for your water resistance and keeping the structural weave of your outer shell of the Pack up .. And you Don't even want a Pack sewn with 'cost cutting' by using cheaper Poly. thread . Nylon Thread is FuckAll handsdown going to give you YEARS more wear than Poly. thread on strength. wear and tear on all the sewn seams . And even your Webbing's on your pack that are Nylon are going to also last years longer with buckle friction and abrasion wear .
