well as it states.. i would like to know whats the best all round ? what do the pro's over seas use ? if they had to go one way either a g3 phantom where the scabbard comes off the back pack or would you use a drag bag with a back pack attached to the outside or ??

I am not a pro heck i wish i could get mall ninja status how ever I think the g3 phantom eberlestock might be the better choice here since you can remove the bag and just use the scabbard when you wanna go to the range and then attach the bag when you want to go _______ um camping or what ever fits nicely in that blank.

but curious how the pros do it so enlighten me

Shoot me a PM with your questions. I'd be happy to help in any way possible. I know the Eberlestock drag bag pretty well.
Don't know where this thread is going to go....

hahaha

and to ansewer the post directly above me, two ways i see my self using this... one being just to go from the range and back... the other being a mix of ways.

we have bear here in my area of pa and even though i have not herd of any one being attacked i dont wanna be the first so i could put my camping stuff in the bag and in the scabbard maybe a shotgun maybe a fal or g3 type rifle..

then when its strictly range time i can just unclip the back pack from the drag bag or eberlestock pack and go to the range... i just want to know which one is more practical drag back with pack attached to the out side or eberlestock phantom

2. Sounds like a small pack and a shooting mat that you can wrap your rifle in is what you need for "range-ops"...an Eberlestock pack is an expensive solution to a problem you don't really have.

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

in the interest of full disclosure...Eberlestock is one of our Team sponsors. That being said, I have used drag bags in the field before mainly the Eagle drag bag. Now I use a Phantom from Eberlestock. I have used the gunslinger and the gunslinger II and they were both great but I like the Phantom best.

The drag bag was good but it didn't hold enough extra stuff. I am in the school of "its better to have and not need than to need and not have" so I tend to carry a bunch of stuff. So in the end I had to carry a pack with it.

I use the Phantom for just about everything. I can go anywhere with it. I can fold up the scabbard and it looks just like a regular back pack which is good since it goes on planes. It fits in the overhead just fine (minus weapon of course)

When I go to the range I stuff everything I need in the pack and then stuff the rifle in the scabbard. I can even put a shotgun in a side scabbard and a broken down AR carbine. yes it all fits. It's comfortable to carry and is built solid.

Now the rifle scabbard does come off to use as a drag bag but I would never do that in the field...one, it takes more than a few minutes to take it off...and two, it takes at least double the time to put it back on.

I use the Phantom at all my competitions...from Rifles Only to NorCal to ASC winter...I literally take this everywhere and it's always full.

I wish I had this pack when I was in the Corps.

Respectfully,

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

For range work and comps an Eagle HSRC combined with a day pack is the fastest and most convenient for me to use.

For carrying a load in the field, or when carrying two rifles (M4 and bolt-gun), the Eberlestock is the ticket. But it sucks having to put the rifle in, and take the rifle out, over and over again if you are doing more shooting than carrying.

Also keep in mind that if you intend to live out of it for a few days and/or climb with it on, and you know how to properly pack, you will be much happier with a smaller Eberlestock than you think you need.

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

Are you carrying this pack to your weekly Pokemon card match?

It should be able to carry your Code Red and Twinkies with ease. The rifle scabbard will cradle your super sized slim jims.

Good luck, follow Outsy's advice!

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

I've been quite happy with the Gunslinger II. Loaded up with an AE and a carbine, plus pistol, ammo, rear bag, food, water, and various other clutter, I can get an impressive amount of crap in one bag, and carry it reasonably well.

I'd wondered a few times if the Phantom might not have been a better choice, but hearing KJ's feedback on the pain of disassembly/reassembly makes me think the GSII was the correct one to go with for me.

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

It's not really a pain to take off...it just isn't as quick as you might think.

Also for me I am not stalking anymore. If I was still in the Corps I would have loved this pack since I could leave my main pack behind while I took off in a low crawl pulling the drag bag behind me to the FFP.

The zipper is great since you can get at it quickly. I look at the Skycrane model and I just wish I was still 24 years old...I would have been the warmest Devildog in the bunch with all that room...however, my back aint what it use to be...lol

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

I'll run a gunslinger 2 for 2-3 day overnights here in the southwest. It packs well and carries plenty of water, food and kit for 3 days. Any longer than that a larger pack would be needed. I'd recomend the Eberlestock padded shooting mat as it doubles as a great ground cover when camping.

If i'm going to the range then get a mat/bag combo and call it a day.

Re: eberlestock vs regular drag bag

I've used a drag bag, but the got an Eberlestock Dragonfly and like it much better. I have to echo the good remarks about their customer service. I emailed Glen with questions, he responsed promptly and was extremely helpful. The product itself is awesome, I use for hiking, travel, etc...in addition.
