looking for a cheeck piece? as i finally got pictures of my mkii downloaded, i thought i'd share a cheekpiece option that's functional and economical. keep in mind i shoot rifles leftie, for "normals" it would be mounted on the bolt side.

it is actually a CAA cheekrest for their 6position collapsible ar stock. just get a picatinny rail, cut to about 2.5", drill holes in the stock, two screws to attach the rail. the cheekpiece is removable, so you can make "benchmarks" on the vertical adjustment frame for different rifles: one cheek piece for all of them. a benchmark can be made also if the cheekpiece interferes with bolt removal, mark it remove it, put it back in, return cheekpiece to benchmar, back to your height setting.

it has forward / backward adjustment (on the rail) and vertical. i like to pitch the rail a little so as you go back and forth on the rail, it acts as a pitch adjustment on the cheekpiece and any micro adjustments to pitch can be made with the vertical.

cheek piece $24.00, rail $14.00 (used on 3 stocks once cut). you may have to play with the "spring" that locks the cheekpiece into place for better locking and sturdiness, but i really like this cheekpiece setup.

Re: Economical cheekpiece

biggest reason for the bipod position is that it puts more weight where it belongs toward the receiver, and balances the weight better (pivot point). and reduces any flex with the stock, just like you said for varmints and stuff, all my hunting rigs are set up the same way

the studs on this rifle were never used for a sling, this is my "from the safe to the car to the range and back" rifle. there were actually 3 studs on the forearm, using ere each one as a different mounting point (like an anchutz rail) for the different types of shooting i do. plus the different stud locations give good reference points for off hand shooting finger placements. plus when using a bag on the front, i can "lock" it into place between the studs.

the bubble i have mounted on the 20 moa base is worth every penny also (cheepo $20.00 b square and not the 69.00 folder). our benches here are tilted one to another and the level helps with not canting and accuracy from 75yards and on. good tool to have for off hand also.

Re: Economical cheekpiece

tha's pretty slick. Could use that on the new Marlin b/c my objective lense necesitated a higher set of rings, changing my desired weld from cheek bone to jaw bone. It's not uncomfortable, but just not "right". I'm a cheap bastid, and this is RIGHT up my alley.

Re: Economical cheekpiece

the first set of pics (of the wood stocked mkii)is a simmons pro hunter 6-24 sf mildot, the turrets came with it, however the larger single numbers were etched into the turret by me. the regular have a click count going up to near 60, marked in increments of 10. gets a little confusing, so i put in the "inch"
increments on it to be less confusing. will do until i get a nikon for it.

the camoed marlin is the centerpoint, and that's the way they came.

Who did that bolt knob on your savage? I just got a new MK II BTVS for my birthday and would really like to have a different knob on it. Let me know.
thanks,

does good work, does what you want as long as it's legal and safe. had too many smiths around my parts that do what they think they should do, but this guy is big on customer requirements.

thanks, i'm doing the same thing to a project .22 i'm doing now, as a matter of fact i'm waiting for paint to dry on the stock before i start attaching it, so i thought i'd catch up on my "foruming".
