It's been bad this year, knocked the hell out of my crew for almost a week. It's bad enough around here right now two of the local schools have closed today and tomorrow, one elementary school has 90+ kids out sick

My 5 year old took a week to pull out of it. He's a tough little fucker when it come to colds and stuff but he was out! Like everyone else; High fever that meds barely helped. A cool bath more than once to keep him cool more than once. They're saying this is the same strain that we had in '14. My wife and I had it that year and it was just about the worst we've ever had. Hopefully that mean we won't get it again.

My wife is a teacher at the local high school. They got the notice that they are out of subs because of this.

    Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!

Nothing that bad since the blizzard of '95-'96. We both got it terrible. The missus almost threw up watching over my shoulder as I played a 3D flying game to check on my spatial orientation before trying to drive.

    The driving part no kidding.....

Our doc said that the high fever and high blood pressure is part of this strain. I bet there were 2-3 days that I couldn't safely drive. Watch that fever close, we lost one of our buddies to this flu. The high fever got him.

Finally getting over it myself. As said before, Hydrate! Mine lasted about 5 days (seems to be the going number this year), but realize, it'll have you weak for a fair number of days after that.

If in doubt, go see a Doc. This year's shit is a killer to some; don't take chances.

Tamiflu is most effective if it's started within 24 hrs of symptom onset. After 48 hrs it's pretty worthless and I don't even prescribe it after 48 hrs so I tell all my patients to get in ASAP.

I lost my Mom three weeks ago because of the flu. She was in poor health anyway, but she got the flu while in the hospital and never recovered. Even your dogs can get it from you. My sister has it right now, and both of her dogs have it too. Don't screw around with it. It's some serious shit.

    Sorry for you loss man.

To add also for those with sick family members: there is a prophylactic dosing of Tamiflu (once a day for 10 days) that is doing very well for my patients with sick contacts.

Propylatic , does that mean in the ass . If so a few questions . Do you use chloroform . Will I get dinner and a smoke . And lastly while very tempting could you not punch me in the back of the head whilst doing it . I have a maonster headache .

Prophylaxis actually means "things undertaken or used in order to prevent disease," as in condoms helping prevent the birth of specimens like Maser.

For some yes, for others, not so much. My wife got hers, and it seemed to limit the severity of getting the flu for her (she still got it, but it was pretty mild). I, on the other hand, missed getting mine, and paid for it in spades. Get your flu shot if you haven't gotten it yet....

It's about 10-20% this year so pretty poor. But those that got the shot seem to be less severe. There's also a cross reactivity with H3N2 (a major strain this year) where people that have gotten the flu shot for the last several years in a row appear to have protection despite the current shot not matching the current strain and the fact that the flu shot typical does not confer long term immunity.

We’ve gotten the shot a few times in the past. Ive got kids 6 and 13. Don’t think they’ve gotten in 3 years. I just hate the thought of injecting something into my body that’s grown in chicken eggs in China.

This went through Australia during our winter. It is a killer, and not the usual suspects (old and ill). High fevers and people suddenly stop breathing in their sleep. We lost a friend in her 30s - went to bed on Friday and air ambulance to Sydney on Saturday. Didn't make it through Sunday.

It is now too late to take the flu vaccine. The strain mutates too quickly for the vaccine to be produced in time; it should make the flu less severe if you had the injection at the start of winter.

Fluids, rest, paracetamol and avoid crowds as much as you can.

I had the Flu right before Christmas, took over a week to get to the point that I could go back to work. Its the worst case I have ever had, personally. It was really rough, like cant get out of bed rough.

I now fear I may have the flu. Does it cause hallucinations? as I just thought I may have been Boning Hillary with grease gun and a bucket of gravel in hand for traction and worrying about the proper grit?
Seriously, I am starting to feel like shit and hope this is not a full blown thing coming on. FM

If you really feel worse tomorrow morning go to you doc. Tamiflu is most effective if started in the first 24 hrs.

Yeah go to the doc . I had to go to urgent care cause regular doc ain't answering phone . Went on day three and doc says he only treats if caught in the first two days . I am four days and noght now of feeling like shit . Sweatin so bad I soak the bed
while simultaneously freezing my ass off . 800mg of motrin does not touch the pain . In a phrase fuck this .

I'm the same, only treat my patients in the first 48. Sorry man hang in there.

Damn bro I hope you get better soon! This year's flu is the same as 2014/15. I got that shit in Feb 2015 but like a tough guy waited until day 3 to see my Doc. Bad fricking mistake! Was in the bed for 6 days. Pneumonia set in and I hack coughed for 5 more weeks.

My cousin and her husband came into town and attended a party with my wife and I and he got the flu as well, presumably on the same night, but saw a doc, got Tamiflu and was back at work in two days.

I wish I has seen this thread when you posted it and had talked you into seeing a doc sooner. Get well soon!

I'm in MO and we have had 50,000 confirmed cases this season. Had two friends end up in the hospital with it.

According to the ND Dept. of Health, reported flu cases are up over 400% from 2016/17. 12 deaths as of 1/25/18. A real nasty bugger. A lot of nursing homes closed to the public.

The Child Bride and I have so far avoided getting hit. With her respiratory issues, the flu would be serious, like hospital/O2 tent serious. None of the kids or grandkids have caught it, good news.

In my line of work I mostly avoid people, by choice and design. Haven't had the flu in the last 6 years. If we can get through February without getting infected, the bug should start to slow down.

I may have missed it, but 'why' only in the first 48? And what are they treated with?

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is the medication. Data shows its most effective in first 24, some benefit in first 48 and no benefit after 48 hrs. Some docs will still give after 48 but I don't as I don't make a habit prescribing things that won't, or have very small likely of helping my patients.
