Building up a Rem 700. Got a SPS Tac this past weekend. Now need a scope base. Thinking of a EGW one piece base. Can't tell if they have a built in recoil lug. Anyone who has one can tell me if they do?

Would a recoil lug be critical with a .223 anyway?

Re: EGW scope bases

I have a tactical egw on my spa tact. 308. TPS rings with USO scope and she make one raggy 5 shot group hole at 100 yards.

Re: EGW scope bases

Wouldn't sweat having a lug or not on a .223. You can step up to 8-40 screws if you're concerned. And for the extreme, you can always glue the base on to the reciever. Just follow the steps for bedding, sans using release agent.

Re: EGW scope bases

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the EGW base would work just fine. Now on to a scope and TPS rings I think.

Wonder if Midway USA will ever get the Vortex HS 5-15 back in stock for $499?

Re: EGW scope bases

The EGW bases that I had on my Savage 10 and 110 rifles did not have a recoil lug, if I recall correctly. Both of them worked just fine with .308 and heavy scopes.

Re: EGW scope bases

The egw base is the ONLY base I have ever had break loose, not matter what was tried. No recoil lug whatsoever. On a .223...who knows. On a 7wsm...piece of shit.

Re: EGW scope bases

If I wanted to go with a similarly priced and quality scope base with a recoil lug, what would you folks suggest. This is just a target/fun gun build in .223, not one used in a professional capacity like some folks on this site use them for.

Re: EGW scope bases

TPS is the best quality-on-a-budget IMO. Their base is nice. Healthy recoil lug and fits nicely to their rings. That setup holds up to my hot .243 hand loads just fine.

Re: EGW scope bases

I have an EGW HD base on a 338 LM, no recoil lug but does have 8x40 fasteners. It's remains properly torqued in place no problem. On a 223 it's a non issue and a very good rail for he price.

Re: EGW scope bases

I have an EGW HD base and TPS rings holding an 8-32 NXS on my 300WM. Roughly 300 rnds through it with no issues.

A drop of low strength loc tite on each bridge before installing the base goes a long ways towards keeping things in place.

Re: EGW scope bases

Not my favorite. The base is ok but the screws that were on mine were soft and stripped pretty easy. No, I did not over torque them. The heads were just soft. I still use it but would rather have seekins.

Re: EGW scope bases

Thanks for all the replies! I'm thinking of a TPS alloy 0' base (only shooting out to 300 yds regularly). I am trying to figure out though if I use a Vortex 4-16x50 scope, what height rings to get. I saw the formula in a sticky above, but not having a base yet don't know what height a 0' base typically is. Anyone know?

With that, I can figure out which TPS rings I need. Looks like the low one's might work if a base is 4-5mm high.
