I know the X is for hunting and the M is for match/target , but I'd like to know if anyone has done a ballistics gelatin test on both @ identical loads and if so what was your findings ?
Thanks !

+1 I'm working with the 225gr ELD-M in 300wm right now, and I'd love to know how well they'll work on longer range deer hunting, instead of having to find some of the 212gr X stuff.

That's got my interest also , but the one that intrigues me is the 168 g for my 308 as a dual purpose bullet !
I should get my 1n9 twist Broughton 300WM back form Score High any time now and I'll be testing the heavy ELD- M 's .
I'd really like to see some gelatin damage comparisons between the two types , ELD-X & M !

The eld-x is going to have better results, in gel, than the elf-m. Plain and simple. But shot placement is always more important. If you can deliver an elf-m exactly where it needs to go, you're going to have a DRT animal. People have been killing gave with match bullets for a very long time. The Berger VLD hunting bullet was originally their match bullet. It worked so well for hunting that it became their hunting bullet when they thickened the jacket to create the current VLD. The AMAX has been a popular hunting bullet for years despite being listed as a match bullet.

That said, personally, I have match loads and hunting loads and I use hunting bullets for hunting and match bullets for targets. Just cuz I probably CAN kill with a match bullet doesn't mean I should. If an animal takes a step before the bullet gets there, the better expansion of the hunting bullet may make recovery easier. At long range you're going to need to find a bullet that'll expand at low velocity. For a real long shot I wouldn't use a ELD-M on an animal.

Please define a real long shot with let's say a 155 or a 168 grain ELD-M @ 2850 fps ( 155 g ) & 2740 fps ( 168 g ) in 308 WIN . I have used the Berger 168 Hunting and it was flawless at 473 yds but would not group as well as the 168 BERGER Hybrid in my Rifle . In researching the ELD-X & M X&M both have what HORNADY describes as their AMP jacket but no information as to jacket thickness respectively .
I always strive for perfect bullet placement and have experienced first hand an at ease animal taking a step at the shot , thankfully they all expired quickly . I'm still curious as to results in gelatin between the HORNADY offerings and always restrict my range to the fps and expansion of the projectile at that range . My quandary is the lightest offering from HORNADY for bullet weight in the ELD-X line is 178 grains and will not fit my magazines.I must single load for acceptable accuracy .
