Range Report Elevation correction for rain?

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

Have shot in the rain alot and have never had it effect my elevation.

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

I always just figured it was affected by how hard it was raining and size of the raindrops

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

I live in NW Washington St, & have never had to adjust for rain. The water drops can't actually touch the bullet because of the shockwave around it as it's supersonic.

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

The only thing that could be accounted for is humidity. But it has such a small effect on ballistics that I just about always leave it set @ 50%. I guess if you live in a place where it's always humid or always bone dry you could do one extreme or the other. The thing that surprised me to learn is that dry air is actually more dense.

Ha!

wes in AZ.... never heard of 'rain' here ! </div></div>

Ha, Ha! I lived in Glendale for 3 yrs. It RAINS there...For about 5 minutes at a time, floods the streets, & underpasses, & it's gone.

You probably wouldn't ever shoot while it's doing that. Can't see 20yd let alone 100.

Can't see the rain for the duststorm!!!
cough, cough...
Got choked out yesterday.

hmmmmmmm....wonder if the bullet is deflected by the dust particles??????????

Really? How does wind affect the bullet, then?

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

The force wind creates acts laterally on the bullet in a cumulative manner whereas a theoretical collision with a drop of rain is an instantaneous event and the energy transferred is minimial. This is negated of course in practice by the centrifugal forces and velocity of the projectile, whose energy far exceeds that of any rain drops encountered in the trajectory.

I'll find out today. Its a freakin swamp here.

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

OK here's my observations...

It affected elevation. I'm normally 6' tall and today I was only 5'10" 1/2. My truck sat about 3" lower. Well...OK...it sank 3 inches.

It was raining like a bitch as you can see. One issue was that it got hard to see the target at times. This pic is at full zoom and there's a plate at 600 and 850.

I think based what I saw today I'd say it does affect my vertical spread but I think saying that it affects elevation is misleading. I'm not sold on the notion that the pressure wave prevents raindrops from contacting the round. To the contrary I think the round has to push through them and has the same effect as a headwind, albiet intermittently.

I rarely get much deviation in vertical spread but today I saw more vertical than horizontal. Where it was really noticable was at 600 yds since I use a smaller plate. Splash was easy to see since there was several inches of water on the ground and I saw numerous shots go wildly low which never happens to me, and these were called hits. At 850 those low shots were still on the plate as the plate was much bigger.

Winds were too crazy to call and were all over the place. I did tag my cold bore and missed 2 out of 20 on this target. I know that an aircraft eats more runway because the tires have to push water out of the way and I'd wager the effect is similar for a projectile. It seemed to increase my vertical spread (from normal) around 4 inches on the low side.

I doubt a light rain or shooting at shorter distances would matter much. I also have to factor that I was shooting through some steady streams of roof runoff from the overhead.

What I'd like to know is whether looking through a curtain of rain affects your perception of the target in the same way that water can bend light in other situations such as the old pencil in a glass of water trick. I wonder if there is a mirage effect.

Well, maybe if you're scared of a little water.

Just a guess but the "pressure wave" can't even distort a sheet of paper.

Shooting sub's in the rain, is a lesson best learned first hand.
I shoot a lot of cast subs, and the style of the nose does make a difference in rain an sleet.
The best all around 30 cal design is the Lyman 311334
Factory subsonic ammo sucks, and is so over priced it's not even funny.

I suppose not really. I usually have the range to myself when its raining so I can see it. I can say the same about really windy days.

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

no guys rain can make a diffrence especialy the "big ol' fat rain" hahahaha just kidding no rain wont make a diffrence on your bullets impact. even if it did, it is not more than human error!

wink wink..... Not me :)

Re: Elevation correction for rain?

my guess is if you can still see the target, you are close enough and the rain/snow is light enough that a correction is negligible, if you cannot see the target, best bet is a MG to spray around the vicinity
