Wilderness pack in is gonna run you the most, late season hunt is gonna be somewhat cheaper in some areas.. but lots colder.

figure out a state you want to hunt in and then look at the outfitters in those states and start looking for a hunt and time period you can afford.

PGS on here would be a great place to start. He has incredible hunts in Montana.

Or DYI like suggested above...

Re: Elk hunting suggestions anyone?

I have done this a couple of times. Early bow season was beautiful, second rifle was well, very white! Was great fun, not expensive and nice week away. Haven't killed an elk yet but still want to. Only problem we had was we are deer hunters from the midwest, hunting mulies was easy, but elk not so easy. Certainly worth trying if you haven't done it. You can get a lot of information off the internet, and some outfitters will give you advice. If you have 4 or 5 going a drop camp isn't that expensive either. Good Luck!

Re: Elk hunting suggestions anyone?

We normally do a two week trip to CO during the early rifle season for about $1,100 to $1,200 a piece if you have three guys. That includes everything, including a hotel for two weeks(one room), gas, tags, food, literally everything.

You can get across the counter tags in the early rifle season in most areas. We hunt in the Paonia-HotchKiss area on Electric Mountain. Lots of elk. Easy access. We go a week early and spend the whole first week scouting, and trout fishing. There is a fantastic river a stones throw from the hotel(slight exageration-it is actually across the street). You can go to Black Canyon for an afternoon. Or Grand Mesa. Just a really nice place.

Good hot meals, good beds, great hunting, reasonable prices. In the BlM lands you can even use a 4-wheeler if you choose. But there are plenty of places that are rugged enough that no one can get a 4-wheeler into if you don't like 4-wheelers.

There are also some great places to camp on the Mountain and save some money. And more than rugged enough places if you are a pack-in kind of guy. A little bit of everything really. And normally the weather in the early season is nice. However I did see it snow over 3 feet one year in the first two days of season!!

Get creative. Tom.

Re: Elk hunting suggestions anyone?

Been hunting cows in NM for 10years. Much cheaper if you just want to kill an elk for the hunt and meat. If you are worried about ornaments on it's head, thence price is a bit more. We turn a cow hunt for ~$900 all inclusive on a private ranch. We are lucky though, as this is pretty inexpensive by most standards.

Re: Elk hunting suggestions anyone?

Got a friend who manages a ranch with 40 sections in Nogal NM that backs up to wilderness land. He has the only access to the wilderness. Its about $900 per hunter per cow tag. He has some facilities that you can rent for around $150 per day that will sleep 20 plus people. He does late season hunts in January for the cows. I took my 11 year old son and he shot a cow the first hour or so of hunting.

Pretty decent roads on the property we went everywhere in my wife's Honda Odessey Mini Van.

It has been dry this year, so I don't know what they are doing or what the state will allow them in terms of cow tags. They have decent bulls, but you would be hard pressed for anything better than a SCI bronze level.

There was processing available locally for less than $1 per lb. PM if you need more information.

Re: Elk hunting suggestions anyone?

I've hunted the Frank Church Wilderness every year for the past 9 years. It is a true wilderness hunt on horses, in tents, no communication. Great for a father-son bonding. Outfitter is Mile High in Challis, Idaho. You can hunt Elk, Deer, Mountain Lion, Bear and Wolf all on one hunt. You tell Travis that Greg DeLuca sent you and you want a deal and I know he will accomodate, I took numerous game including a 315 Elk some nice Mulies and a 6 1/2 ft boar. I've hunted all over and I keep going back to the Frank.
