Thinking about making a elr 30-06 cause good speed and cheap to shoot relative to most other calibers, I will not be hunting or doing anything in that nature just range at 300 yards and going out of state to hopefully shoot past 1000 yards! So for barrel length I was thinking 30 inch cause its a 30 caliper plus gives me a little speed advantage what do you guys think might be to long? But my main concern is barrel twist cause I still need to use it for 300 yards so I might have to shoot the heavys all the time or maybe go down? Let me know any advice is help full

Re: Elr 30-06 barrel length and twist

I too started out looking for an AR-style 30-06 and came up virtually empty - found no current manufacture and only one (Cobb MCR - last made 5-10 yrs ago, might can find one used; sorry I forget if it's ~$2500 or ~$5000) that is post-WWII.

You might want to consider .308 for low ammo cost - it should get you close to 1k with a long barrel, but from what I've read you would likely need to hand load.

Pretty much anything hotter than .308 will have the same price jump for good ammo, but if 1k is more important then I'd suggest a hard look at 300WSM.

Good luck!
