Hi from Nevada. I am not hardly the best shot around but I know how to make luck. I mostly just shoot steel. Or my home made 12 inch wide 18 inch tall knock down targets. I regularly shoot out to 2200 yards with both rifle and pistol. The knock downs are all I shoot at once I get past a Mile.
For me distance starts at 1000yds with my Thompson Contender Pistol.
As far as luck goes. My longest shot standing offhand is just over a mile on a full size silhouette plate. My longest first round of the day from a stone cold barrel was with my 338 Lapua at 2730yards on my 12x18 knockdown.
As far as my Regular ELR shooting. I get out several times a year for up to 2 weeks at a time to shoot ELR. My course of fire is 1000yds 1200yds 1400yds 1600yds 1790yds 2080yds and 2200yds.
Dont laugh at my Pistol it can deliver a 30cal 200gr sierra match bullet at 2200yds still going 850fps. And the accuracy will surprise you.
My long range cartridges are. 223/556 as far as a mile. 300 Blackout 25-06, 30-06, so far as far as 2200yds. And my 338 Lapua so far 2730 yards. The 300 Blackout is not only the most underrated long distance cartridge. It is also the most versatile that ever was. In a 16 inch lightweight AR there is not much it cant do. Also my 460 XLR 1200yds.
As for as open sights my Sharps rifle 1200yds so far. I have a 1903 Springfield. So far on my 12 inch wide by 18 inch tall targets with peep sight 1 mile plus 30 yards. I am 64 years old and I dont need corrective lenses. And about seeing a 12x18 target a mile its easier than you think. My SKS so far I have had success out to 1000 meters with the original combat sights. Target was 18 inches wide and 24 tall. I know what it takes to keep the target, front sight, and rear sight all in focus at the same time. Its easier than most people think.
I hope to learn a little at shooting at distance here since I am self taught.
