Emergency Preparedness forum?

Today's events got me thinking. For the second time in less than a month, I've had to go backup power due to extreme storms. I've lived here for more than 10 years and never really had any power outages that lasted more than 2 hours. This year the winds and lighting have been unusually fierce and damaging. I'm fortunate in that I have acquired many skills, tools and equipment, which allow me to weather/survive most emergencies.

So I started to think there might be other Hide members that would like to network, share information, or provide assistance.

To be clear, I'm NOT talking black helicopters or the Mayan end of the calendar/world - only positive contributions. Example: I remember reading a post on the topic of bringing Hide members, holding HAM radio operators license, together.

Just thought there may be some interest.

Good idea for a forum and one that a lot of us would use often. But first, I think a forum for Shanks endless fatties would be appropriate.

I've learned a lot about the topic just from the random posts people post here.

Having noticed the new additional forums, I've given some thought to the site's direction. While I may or may not not have cause to participate in the new ones; I am equally certain that Frank's judgement in all things related to The 'Hide is both final and appropriate.

If he builds it, somebody's sure to come...

Greg,

No doubt Frank is the final word. Moreover, I respect his decisions as to what direction he takes the Hide. It's pretty apparent the primary theme of the Hide is about firearm and precision shooting.

Initially I hesitated writing and submitting this post. However, I went ahead with it for 2 reasons. 1.) The high caliber, knowledge and backgrounds (e.g., LEO, Military, Fire, etc.) of many Hide members. 2.) The subject of emergency preparedness, or elements related to it, keep popping up on the Hide.

In closing I'll just say that I have not many forums that operate with the level of integrity and rich content as the Hide.

I think it would be an excellent addition to the Hide, and would fit in well with the overall content. Afterall there are threads about physical fitness, fieldcraft, and other topics that relate to this very topic, "Whats in your bugout bag". So why wouldn't a thread about emergency preparedness fit.
Of course it's all up to Frank. It's his house. JMHO.

SturmHead - along those lines I have been seeing more posts on the subject of MRE's, food storage and emergency power generation. Those too would fit nicely under a forum for emergency preparedness.

I love this forum idea for what my opinion is worth (which is nothing at all)I think it would make a great addition to all the great info already found on this site.

I live on the gulf coast. Our level of preparedness is going to be different from other areas but many common areas exist.
For instance water.
After Hurricane Katrina water was scarce for a couple of days, then it flooded in(ha ha) by Blackhawk and truck. But what about those who were unable to come to town to get it. I prepared for water problems in two ways. One is a well on my property that I can run with by backup generator. The other is an ultrafiltration unit I can use beaver pond water and filter and drink until the filters are used up (about 6000 liters).
Electricity
In our area after a hurricane power can be down for several weeks and even months. So a backup generator is needed. I got one that runs on Natural gas off the pipeline and also runs off LP gas from a buried tank. I would only run the genset three times a day for about 2hours each time to allow for cooking, cleaning, water pumping, battery charging ect....
Fuel
That is a huge problem. Gas went up in price immediately when it was forecast to hit our area. Having a few gallons of mogas is not going to help much. I keep 20 gallons of gas and 10 of diesel in rotation at all times on my farm. After the storm is the worst because after you burn up all the diesel and mogas cleaning up trees and debris there is nothing left for the truck. It was four weeks after Katrina before we had reliable gas from the filling station.
Health care.
It will be for emergencies only. Expect to get turned away if you are not bleeding badly, impaled by a fencepost (that was a good story) or having a heart attack. If you don't have your Rx in 3 month quantities with refills you are behind. And keep basic first-aid stuff in the house too. It is too easy to get a bad infection after a storm.
Xbox
There is no xbox after the hurricane until power is restored. So suck it up and deal with it. Better yet get busy with the chainsaw.
Food is not really an issue. Some people want to stock MRE and stuff. We have a couple of big bags of rice and beans on hand. The are big bags of swimming pool salt and porkers on the hoof aplenty.

I think such a topic would be useful.

I live in an are where we have several and sometimes extended power outages, wild fires, flashfloods, and some nasty snow storms. I also live on a private road in whick I have to keep open. I also have to haul water from town so I normally can't just wait it out.

But I fear it would drift to Zombies and End of the World crap which would turn me off post hast.

I've seen such subjects evolve into ultimate weirdness, too. But I think the site has handled other hot button subjects and issues very well. I just don't have a lot of envy for whomever gets to Moderate that forum.

I was kinda concerned the physical fitness forum could get turned into a musclehead/extreme nutrition campground. In my situation it's irrelevent, but if it fits the 'Hide mindset, then I guess an E/P forum could too...
