Suppressors Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

Entry gun,,,, SWAT TEAM yes you can... I am currently using a Gemtech and a YHM I am outfitting new rifles and looking into getting new cans for all of them.. Need to be rated for full auto as well.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

I am seriously considering a Surefire mini. They are planning on releasing a titanium version sometime around December that is said to weigh around 8oz.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

..

I have yet to hear a mini that is worth paying for a stamp. Look, the .223 is one of the hardest rounds to suppress to begin with. The mini cans I have heard are fair to poor and on a short barrel, say less than 12" they are uniformly awful. Unburnt powder in a short barrel is a challenge for any can designer, a short can makes the process impossible...so far. Ti on a short barrel has its unique issues as well, mostly having to do with diffuser and primary erosion. The way around it requires, amound other things, initial chamber capacity....no mini can do it.

In short minis suck.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

yes he did, and as I stated, fair (C) compared to a 6"+ unit for perhaps 6 rounds and then poor (D). Awful (F) on the stubs. Like everybody else, I wish it wasn't so...but it is. Fat don't cut it as the issue is the projectile chase jet.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

The OP didn't state any requirements other than "full-auto capable". We don't know what features are important to him. Thus, recommendations at this point would have to be made on pure assumptions. To the OP, it would be better if you give us more detail about what is important to you. That way we can better advise you.

Regarding "mini" suppressors, they do have their place. Since the OP is a law enforcement officer looking for a departmental purchase, their suppressors would transfer on a Form 5; so no $200 tax. Even if they were paying a tax, just because a product isn't the quietest on the market doesn't mean it isn't the right tool for the buyer. Some people are not as price sensitive and may want features besides overall sound suppression even if they are paying a $200 tax.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

I assumed from the title "Entry 5.56, 14.5 barrel suppressor recommendation" meant that the OP wanted to put a suppressor on a 14.5 inch barrel... What was I thinking?

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

Mini suppressors on SBRs are loud, end of story.

Now, if the OP places heavy value on weight and size, then perhaps the mini suppressors would still make some sense. But if he wants something pretty quiet and able to take a full-auto beating, none of the mini cans would be on my list. I'd be looking at the AAC M4-2000, the Surefire FA556AR, and that's about it.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

Bookhound, I have no idea what you just wrote so I'll be clearer.

This person asks if for Semi/FA 14.5" barrel entry rifle a recommendation could be made for a suppressor. This person furthers go on to ask if mini cans should be considered. I anticipate he wants to suppress that very same 14.5" semi/FA barrel when he is engaged in tight quarters. Six rounds FA and every mini I have heard is not worth buying when compared to any number of others make and model cans that all come in at or around 3" longer. As Conqueror has dealt some names, I'll add two more. AWC Raider T.H.O.R. in Ti as it is FA rated, is 2" longer than a mini and...get ready...weighs less. It is the quietest .223 can I have heard (AAC M4-2000 we must add the brake weight back in, taking the functional unit over 20 ozs - same with the Surfire which I think is a loud can). The other can is also a direct attach and is the AAC Ranger (must be 2nd Gen), same dB rating as their other cans but shorter and lighter. Either of the cans I have mentioned are low presure cans, I think a must for 14.5. FA is serious, SBR FA is critical. Go with a company that has been around, offers a top warranty, has good customer service, has sold FA cans for decades, etc. etc. Hear as many as you can as they distill out extremely quickly. Good luck, let us know where you end up.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

Hello to all and thanks for the input so far. I am looking to outfit out team with new rifles, our current rifles HK MP5, HK MP 5K, HK 53, HK 33, will be traded for Colt M4 with 14.5 FA. We currently have Gemtech for the HK and YHM for the Rem 700.

The rifle will be mainly used for entry and perimeter work. The goal is to fire the rifle without using ear protection. From what I am hearing, the Mini are going to be too loud?? If that is the case, I am looking for input for a can to use for the new rifles. The Gemtech we used were ok but were not too quiet. We are using standard Winchester 55 Gr SP bullets. Hope this helps more in what I am looking for.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Re: Entry 556, 14.5 barrel Surpressor Recommendation

The Mini suppressors are all too loud if you are going to be letting officers shoot the system without any ear protection. Truthfully there is no 5.56 silencer that is truly "ear-safe," but the full-size silencers are a lot closer to this goal than any of the very small cans on the market.

I think you would be well served by the AAC M4-2000 mentioned above. Its internals are 100% inconel (a nickel-based superalloy which will take a FA beating), it is relatively light and small (not THE lightest or THE smallest, but competitive on both fronts), and it is among the quietest 5.56 cans on the market. I would not buy a titanium silencer for a short-barreled machine gun, it is not nearly as durable as inconel even if the manufacturer does "rate" it for FA use.

ETA: The AAC Ranger 2 is also a good silencer as noted above, a bit lighter and smaller than the M4-2000, but it also lacks full-inconel internals and is substantially louder than the M4-2000 (it has only 3 baffles, compared to 7 in the M4-2k).
