So I am new to the group and looking to get into a rifle without spending thousands on a custom. I have read some good things about the REM 700 5R Mil Spec, but not really sure where to start. Thoughts?

Re: Entry Level 308

It all depends on how much cash you want to spend.I would say the best for the money is the sps tactical,it is a great all around rifle for only about 650.The 5-r is probly my favorite factory rifle out of the box, it will cost you about 1150 or so but but you get a nice hs stock,stainless,24" barrel and the 5-r rifleing.Good luck with your decision.

Re: Entry Level 308

I was leaning towards that some rifle at first when I was in your position but went with a Savage 10FCP McMillan intead. Better stock, trigger, and a DBM for the same price.

Re: Entry Level 308

Savage 10FCP Mcmillan! VERY accurate with my 155 Scenar loads.

Re: Entry Level 308

The 5R Milspec is a good deal, still.

I got an FN PBR barreled action from CDNN, not a chrome-lined bbl, and dropped it into an A3 from McMillan's specials page. GAP bedded it very, very nicely and added an extended bolt knob.

Re: Entry Level 308

If you're gonna spend $110 on the 5R...Just get a PSS or SPS varmint and send it out for a custom bbl and trigger job. You may have a little more invested but you will have a much better rifle. I guess it all depends on your budget.

Re: Entry Level 308

Well, assuming you will need a scope for the rifle you choose (is that why you posted in the optics forum) and you are still on a budget, try the Super Sniper 10x mildot. Then, once you get hooked, save your $$$ for a Schmidt & Bender

good luck with your purchase. Can't go wrong with any of the above suggestions

Re: Entry Level 308

My 5R shoots great, and +1 on what Surgent-Shooter said about stock and barrel, also stainless steel, and jewell bolt.
Heard good things about SPS also, but you gotta invest in a new stock is also what I have heard, 5R is ready to go out of the box.

My 5R after Randy @ R+D has done his magic with it.

Good luck on whichever you decide.

Ha! Yeah why is it in the optics forum! PREMIER gets my vote

! hehe...

Also if you venture into other calibers premade barrels are available from Shilen, Lothar Walther, Pacnor, etc... All you need is an action block, barrel nut wrench, go and no go gauge and wala!

Re: Entry Level 308

5R's are nice, but Salvages are a better bang for the buck. I'm on my second custom R700 and on a good day I can get the results I used to get with my factory 10FP (I can get more aftermarket goodies, but that's changing too).

Still waiting on my Premier!

Re: Entry Level 308

Geez, sorry I posted on the wrong site. I will figure it out eventually. Thanks for all of the feedback. So I know how to go get a Savage, what's the deal on the remington 5r? Can't seem to find one anywhere online...

Re: Entry Level 308

savage.... but be aware, those barrel nut rifles are addictive.

i bought the barrel wrench, i think i have about 15 barrels and 5 or 6 action now.... 10-12 stocks.... life is good when you are not paying a smith to set up your rifle, the money goes allot further. lots of good triggers available, but the accutrigger is very tuneable as it is.

Re: Entry Level 308

5r if you can start out that high. From there you can sell off the parts as you move into more expensive high end stuff. Some one will always want those parts. (stock, bottom metal, barrel) Hold onto that action it's one of the better remington actions.

Otherwise I like the SPS tactical 308 20" barrel. If I had to eat mac n cheese for a month to get a 5r over a tac 20" I would every time!

I havn't looked in a while but most are mail ordered to your dealer. Impactguns.com maybe, Again I really don't remember. If your on the northside you can come out and shoot my SPS tac to give you an idea. Its a great starter and chances are will out shoot you for quite some time. the 5R's are very nice thou.

Re: Entry Level 308

Dude I tell you get the Savage FCP McMillan, bed the stock and maybe install CDI's detach mag system and be done with it. The McMillan stock just feels awesome in my hands. I also just traded my AR10 for a FN SPR A2 with a SS barrel and A4 stock and that stock is also awesome!

The last time I was in Spectre Firearms over on Spring Cypress near 249 a few weeks ago they had a 5R in stock.
