Gunsmithing Er shaw barrels?

You are better off going with a top brand name like brux, kreiger, etc. The savings are not worth the quality. I had one and it doesn't shoot much better than a factory barrel.

Walter

Agree - stick with the proven names out there. You may save a few bucks on the blank, but not the place to try and save on a custom build.

As they have said above, it is like going cheap on the tires or brakes for you car, not worth it.

Shaw barrels aren't bad barrels but what you get from something like a Kreiger, Bartline, Rock Creek, Border, Obermeyer, Schneider are well worth the cost. Shaw will be better than your factory barrel, maybe but not significantly.

If you are on a budget and absolutely will not be able to save any more money over the next year...going with the Shaw isn't bad. But if you can get over the "I wan't it now" for a few months, save up and get a better barrel. All it takes is that first bughole group and you'll have that "I'm glad I spent the extra money" feeling.

I was thinking about one for a budget deer rifle im working on, because i can get a savage pre fit with spiral fluting. Do any other manuf. offer this? i have 2 criterion barrels right now and love them.

ER Shaw barrels are GOOD barrels for the most part. They are a run of the mill button rifled barrel that normally has good bore finish and quality. Are they high end barrels? No. If you have a let's say- a Rem 700, and the barrel is not in good shape, 70'ss era and shot a lot and accuracy is getty bad- a 700 replacement barrel in similar contour is a good barrel. .270 Win is not a match round, it is a hunting round and the rifle is a hunting rifle. Easy to get a good barrel- Shaw does it. I do this a lot just because they DO shoot very well and I have had some amazing accuracy out of them. No one has been disastisfied yet with their hunting rifle. I have done 6 in the last year, from .22-250 to .300 Win Mag and everyone has been thrilled.
As well as me. I can order a prethread barrel and install and finish it, make some money for bread and butter work. With that being said, last two barrels to come in are a Bartlein and a Broughton, even just got a Shilen job in the other day- ER Shaw barrels they are not. Not supposed to be. It's like offering your apple customer fresh oranges, long story short. Are they good oranges? Yes, but they aren't apples and some people want apples.

Several years ago, I had them barrel a MK X action in 6.5 x 55. It is in the flimsy factory stock and shoots very well. Having said that, for full on custom build I would use Krieger, Brux, Bartlein, etc.

Heard alot of bad things in the QC department but from most I heard that the CS is worse to deal with if something is wrong than anything. If you get a good one they are happy to talk to you. If you call about a bad one they will crap on you chest like it is your fault. But then again it is all second hand info. So to each his own!

I have 3 McGowan select SS bbls in .223/6x45/.243 and they are all sub moa shooters from 100-700 yds. Nothing but good news from my end. I dont bench rest shoot but at the range I do shoot better than the lijias/benchmark/brux guys next to me. Mostly because I have my loads perfected & know my guns. Sure I can spend $500 on a so called '"top" shelf bbl, but why when I shoot as good or better w/mine
I would buy another in a second. I Borescoped them when I got them and the insides were smooth and sharp as my pals benchmark & shilen customs bbls.
My 200 yd coyote target w/my 6x45. l TO R, .700"/.570"/.640", 65G max load, WHATS NOT TO LIKE!

Everyone says they are not a good barrel for a bolt gun. But there are a lot of people that say they are one of the better barrels for a a AR15. How much since does that make? I can tell you one thing. Everyone that tells you they are junk has never had one. I had them re barrel a M98 and it probably shot better than 1/2 of the custom guns on this board. And, it was chambered in the original 8x57mm. I had this shooting in the .3's all the time. It was not just one group of 3 shots. Everyone gets lucky once in a while and gets a good group. Try doing 10 groups of 7 shots each on different days. That will tell you how well a rifle will shoot. This was with a 200gr Sierra HPBT match bullet doing 2657fps. Look it up and do the math on that once. A lot better than the little ole 308win.

So, are they a Rock Creek, Brux, Bartliene? NO, but they are way better than a factory barrel. The man chambering has more to do with how it is going to shoot than anything anyway. So make your own decision.

The Shaw barrel on a 16" 300 Blackout was good enough, and became very good when handloads were made for it. Quality is just OK but the accuracy is surprising.

The Kreigers and bartliens I have had make me stick with them because of what EVERY one I have seen preforms like. If ER Shaw bbl guys have the same results and track records then I say great, but I feel like getting what I know has been great to me time and time before and see no reason to look elsewhere. I would have no problem putting a button rifled bbl from one of the decent makers on one of my regular hunting rifles because I'm sure it would shoot fine. But with my custom target, LR, or ELR rifles then its going to be decided on weather Krieger or bartlien have crazy backorder times ahead of them. I wouldn't worry a bit about those 2. That's my .02 Saving for the best is usually a good choice in the long run. Good luck.
