No im not pissing on them im investigating the reason behind failure. I believe thats been answered now.
I havent had that problem with mine or seen it before but...
people have good days at work and bad days.
this may have been someones first day at work.
just be glad you werent employing the rifle in a life or death scenario . </div></div>

i'll argue it. a 170 lb person should have no business pounding on the handle in the first place. i have never had to pound on a bolt handle. the people i have seen pounding on bolt handles were not loading properly. if you are depending on a rifle for a life and death scenario, you would be using a proven rifle and proven ammo. </div></div>
So you are staing this is n.i.b. rifle and ammo..
and we are going to blame a guy for taping on the bolt ?
pass on that if a 170 lb guy taping on a bolt handle did that to it by taping it not placing in a vise and hitting with a sledge its a q.c. issue .
now understand im not bashing remington
I would never get rid of mine but ive seen and heard of q.c. issues before and I just cant see how tapping on that bolt can cause a failure like that.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

So it's "taping" now

Op stated 3 "whacks" with his palm, IIRC

I must have missed where he said this was a new in box unmodified factory Remington rifle.

Are you replacing it with a PTG bolt and having someone checking the chambering or are you saying you are getting rid of the whole thing?

Sorry this one was sour for you. That seriously sucks.

So is the round still in the chamber?
If so, you can remove it with a wood dowel rod and keep your face AWAY from the muzzle.
Be carefull!!

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

I know about bad weeks. In the past 10 days I wrecked my 2009 Harley to the tune of $5-$7,000 in damage, but at least I am fairly unharmed, and got bitten by a Rottweiler I was supposed to be watching while a family was on vacation. He bit me 12 hours into it.

How did you get the bolt out? +1 on thank god u didn't get hurt. Anything can be fixed with a little money, except for ur health.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

yeah, cause if the round goes off, it's not like the wooden dowel would be splintered into a million tiny wooden projectiles going every single direction or anything....

And how would u shove a wooden dowel straight down a barrel, and simultaneously manage to keep ur hand not inline with the muzzle??

I guess ud have to use a pair of pliers or something.

If the round goes off and the bolt is out, then the brass is the dangerous part not the bullet.

You could use hydraulics by filling the barrel with fluid and tapping a jag with a patch to push it out.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

rofl....yeah, dropping a 7-ounce dowel on it from a few inches up should really get it moving quick....

it's being worked already via simple physics. thanks though guys.

Grease works well too.
Can give a better seal.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

So let's get this straight. The bolt is out and the round is still stuck but this is because of remington's bolt handle? You still have not addressed the real problem, why is the round stuck?

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

I have seen a Remington 700BDL bolt handle come off during dry firing (the rifle had been purchased new, and had never been live fired except by the factory), where there was no possibility of an oversized round. Sometimes, Remington apparently does not do a very good job of attaching the handle to the bolt.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

I always find it funny when i see pictures showing Remington's exquisite quality.

If anyone here plays paintball. The SP Ion is to paintball, as remington is to long range firearms.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

I'm just shocked that your surprised that your remmy bolt handle wasn't made of space-age metal and that you managed to brake it off.

What planet have you been living on? It is what it is. Stop trying to place blame and fix the problem.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

You know I never see a bolt handle shear from a bolt body without seeing a shitload of solder holding on to the body..who the f taught these people to silver solder. When I solder anything, your bolt knob will break off before the junction at the bolt body.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

LOL No, I don't let "the girls" (I have 3) near my reloading gear. Ferrets are little thieves and will steal and hide just about anything not nailed down. Mine have taken wallets, cell phones, keys, shoes, even a pair of jeans!

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

After reading through this, I'd be inclined to think that there is a chamber issue or the round was out of spec.

But yes, the silver solder method is no good.

On the other hand, really, there is no reasonable way to attach a bolt handle to a bolt body. It should be one piece to minimize failures, whether misuse or not.

Surgeon and Competitive Edge Gunworks have it down.

I feel your pain AF. I had one of the "high dollar clones" do the same thing. Was a major bummer. Hope it all works out for you.

Relax. Assholes on the internet and broken bolt handles aren't that important in the grand scheme of things and nothing to get that worked up about. Deep breath and exhale.

It's only the fucking internet

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

Wow this thread really went to shit.

Have Dan put one of the PT&G threaded handles on and Charlie Mike. Put something behind the live round like a towel before tapping it out from the muzzle. There was a post here last year I think where the guy was trying to back out a round and it went off.

i have to disagree. i own a M700 and have never had a problem with it. Then again, i baby mine.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

ANY mechanical device can fail. ANY manufacturer of firearms can turn out a turkey... and they all do! The OP was unfortunate enough to get one with a faulty handle/bolt body join. Smacking the bolt handle with the palm of your hand, even by a 500 pound gorilla, shouldn't break it... period! Except for a defective joining of the parts, it wouldn't happen.

Irritating? Absolutely! Is the Remington bolt poorly designed? Some will say it is but with millions of model 700 rifles in use, very few fail. If there was a serious problem with them, the US military would be using another platform for their sniper rifles. A constant problem would force Remington to redesign the bolt because sales would suffer. Sales are good and will continue to be.

WRT the OP's bad weeks, he could improve them greatly by leaving the People's Republic of Maryland.

Feel free to share this info with your AFPC contacts at Randolph. </div></div>

Haven't had any use for Randolph since I chose to come to GA in 1987 and retired in 1992. I was offered an assignment to Andrews in 1971 but turned it down. As a native of MD, I knew better!

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

I have used the wood dowel technique in the past. Hold the dowel with a pair of pliers and keep to the side of the action when you swing the hammer? A few beers before might help in the decision.

Re: Ever have one of those weeks you can't win?

don't need to, already got it out per advice shared privately by another member of the forum. and it didn't involve a wooden dowel that could easily shatter/break/become lodged in the bore.

as suspected, factory round was out of saami specifications by enough that it wouldn't fit properly into any match chamber, be it cut by GAP, Karl, Darrell Holland, or anyone else who knows what they're doing, to include the smith who barreled this rifle.

rifle's fine, bolt is headed out the door tomorrow to alaska to have a new handle tig welded on.

Not the way things are done these days. There's no turning down an assignment any more. </div></div>

A lot has changed over the years. I once had orders to Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and finally Korea before I went anywhere. The first three sets were all canceled for one reason or another. I retired from SAC, one of the old major commands that went away when new major commands were devised. I still use the facilities of a nearby AF base that has elements of other services permanently assigned. I saw Marines policing the area around the base hospital just this past Thursday.

Hang in there. Given time, your situation will change. Good luck and I hope you get your bolt back quickly.

Ouch. I spent 2 months in the PI and Thailand, I bet you were sad to see those orders get flushed.

Philippines probably my favorite place in the world. And not for the devilish 'mature' reasons that you guys are probably assuming. ;-p

so now that you know what the problem was, do you think a welded handle would have stood up to trying to extract the case by whacking on it? depending on how stuck the case was, i have a feeling that either the weld would have broken, the handle would have bent or the handle would have broken at the bolt knob.

edit: was it the length to shoulder on the brass that was too long or a diameter? how far out of sammi spec was it? did you measure the rest of the ammo you have? were any other cases out of spec? i would certainly let federal know about this issue.
