Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe had an episode about farming tilapia.
They were fed waste water solids.

Haven't eaten tilapia or farmed shrimp since then.
Properly farmed tilapia are like eating any other fish, tilapia raised in Asia have more chance of contamination do to shitty farming practices. People saw a clip on one show and freaked out.

Same morons pay a premium for shrimp and crabs which also will/do eat shit. While also eating the shrimps shit

nuc i don't know. Hg contamination is huge for most fish in FL,salt or fresh. some fish worse than others, some way worse. have read that fresh is due to polluted wind patterns originating in China. their air pollution is massive,so maybe. salt water fish is from 100+ years of industrial and ag pollution. tuna, shark and tile fish supp the worst. my hg levels were thru the roof when i was eating 1 lb+ of offshore fish a week. in semi trop and trop you can also get Ciguatera. so,these days eating anything has risks. that sucks.

And all this time I thought they ate Cheetos...

Actually, you are better off buying frozen shrimp (raw - not pre-cooked). It ensures a fresher product as it is flash frozen when caught. Fresh shrimp does not store or travel well at all and its definitely past its prime in a day or two. The stores defrost it and sell it as fresh.

There are a few exceptions if you are buying from right off the boat from a local operation same day - or live as (real) sushi chefs prefer.
