Experienced neck turners, need your advice!

I have a new 223 with a .251” neck chamber. Prior to getting the rifle I purchased some Lapua cases to use in it.

With a bullet seated in the new case the O.D.neck measures .250”

I am not new to neck turning but I have never done more than clean off high spots.

My question is how much clearance is required for safety, I don't think .001" will be.

    0.251" - 0.223" = 0.028"

    0.028" / 2 = 0.014" neck wall thickness

    0.0251" - 0.250" = 0.001" Total

    you're clearance is 0.001" / 2 = +/- 0.0005"

not so much a safety issue as is RELIABILITY issue.

I load for clearance of at least 0.001"

    or

    0.001" x 2 = 0.002"

    my current wildcat, 6.5x61 Super

    0.294" neck

    0.294" - 0.264" = 0.030"

my necks are turned to 0.014"

    0.014" x 2 = 0.028"

    0.028" + 0.264" = 0.292"

    0.002" Total or +/- 0.001" clearance.

I would recomend opening it up to .002 total ot .001 at any one point like 6.5x61super said. It does come down to a reliability issue. I use to shoot fitted necks in my bench rifles and after getting away from that I found NO accuracy loss , or gain. You can turn a little more off if you are goung to be shooting in a very dirty enviroment but the .002 total will work fine.
