Re: Experimental Advanced Rifle Sight

I saw something like this last week, it was basically a closed-loop fire control system. So it measures how much you miss by and corrects the sight picture for you in real time. In theory it should result in a 2nd shot hit at most ranges. Maybe more useful for general infantry than precision shooters.

Re: Experimental Advanced Rifle Sight

Lindy,
This was discussed by a Researcher I knew 8 years back when I was still in Cambridge. He was working on the Human Genome Project at the new Brighton Facility at the time and his interest proved fleeting. However, I tried to get a brain trust together of interested scientist I knew between MIT and a few lesser schools within walking distance. Being a middling mind at best (and a Harvard Yarder to boot) it was difficult to hold their attention, however, a few came up with some rather interesting concepts. It quickly became evident that the ability of anything other than the most financially dedicated end user to maintain the tip of the optical sword was going to be temporary at best... I'm honestly surprised that more advanced and practical options to the Zeiss/Hensoldt SAM have not been fielded through open channels...

That said I am going to maintain an analog system and concentrate on my data book rather than the next step. That said we are, imho, due for a Technological Paradigm Shift on Optical/Electronic COGs...

Re: Experimental Advanced Rifle Sight

It will be interesting to see what they can come up with. I would imagine that they have the resources to achieve something at least.

From the same company who brought you the SR-71, F-117, and F-22 now comes the DInGO.

Re: Experimental Advanced Rifle Sight

Without a shadow of a doubt digital sights will be the way of the future. Like many digital camcorders, the user will view an LCD screen and the picture will be aquired by a small camera.

This will enable a low light facility, incorperate a LRF and GPS and will be able to record and transmit data back.

The sight will have built in balistic software and have a number of sensors to measure the environment.

It will also incorperate some system of image stabalisation, and perhaps software such that after the trigger as been pulled, it will fire the shot when the crosshair is in the optimum place...

A lot of the technology is already out there; its just a matter of combining it in a suitable package at an affordable price.
