Just got my first suppressor (an AWC Thundertrap) and took it and a variety of different ammo out to try. The rifle is a 308 Remington 700 Mil Spec with a 20" 5R barrel.

One ammo I tried, and had problems with, was Extreme Shock Sub-Sonic 165 grain frangible. I tested it first without the suppressor to make sure the rifle was able to stabilize the slower bullet and wouldn't result in a baffle strike. After a couple of un-suppressed rounds everything looked good. Attached the suppressor and tried again. That's where the problems started...

First shot I noticed a touch more smoke/debris coming from the suppressor, but didn't think much of it. On the second shot I noticed a significant amount of what I can only call filler material coming out of the ejected shell case. After the third shot the rifle failed to chamber an additional round. Upon inspection I found that the "filler" material had completely fouled the chamber, bolt and lugs. I thoroughly cleaned the rifle and tried to blow out the suppressor as best I could. Both had considerable filler junk in them. I'm finished with this ammo.

Anybody know what or why this happened or have similar experience with this ammo?

My initial thought would be to not use frangible ammo in a suppressor. The slightest deviation or it skimming the baffles would result in some unwanted results. I would also say that the extra puff you saw is the power they were using to load it with. I have tried their standard 175gr loads and its ok, nothing more then showing off at the range as I find it to be useless otherwise.

I hadn't thought about it prior, but yes using frangible ammo with a suppressor doesn't sound too smart. The only thing is this ammo is marketed as "sub-sonic" which would lead you to believe it's intended for use with suppressors. Regardless I'm staying away from it at least with the suppressor.

I've been using SW Ammo's subs and it shoots great. My barrel is a 1-11.25 twist so I was a little concerned about subs but the 175's have shot perfect little holes, no keyholing or slotted impacts.

Its also considerably cheaper than most subsonics i've found, he's also a site supporter

Re: Extreme Shock Sub-Sonic Ammo & Suppressor Fouling

i've never shot frangible through my can (762SD). I was afraid of heavier bullets and saw that SW has tested their 175 on 1-12twist or faster. I ordered and it is awesome to shoot. Like KYS338 said its mostly just to show off at the range or shoot in where my neighbors might get pissed. Its like 6" low when my rifle is 0'd for 100yds with full power. I have had NO issues with smoke clouds or junk flying. The spent rounds look the same as full loads, no chunks of anything just a spent casing.

At $27 a box it is the best subsonic round to me. As soon as funds allow I'm gonna buy a case or so.

I"m betting that's not filling material. I would get a pair of plyers and pull a loaded one to see if theres such a thing. My guess is you'll find there isn't. I think you are shaving your bullets.

Un-burned Powder?

How did it look down the barrel?

I'm going to guess there was a trail of this stuff all the way down.

I have seen some strange things when using reduced loading. Many powders will not burn efficently / cleanly at lower pressures.

Yes - it was all the way down the barrel. Looked like mini pasta tubes. Kind of a orange color and looked/felt like plastic. I'll pull a bullet and see if truly is filler.
