For you guys out there that have this configuration...

What kind of accuracy can you expect from a Remington 700 factory hunting profile barrel SPS in a .243 or 7mm-08 placed in a B&C Medalist Stock with the alum. bedding block?

This is a lightweight hunting gun probably in the compact model 20" barrel for deer hunting normally taking a 250yard and closer?

Debating on if I want to go fully custom for this applicaion?

Thanks for your input...

There is no real definite answer to your question as even two consecutive Remington rifles coming off the line may not shoot the same. I do believe that either the 243 or 7-08(my choice) will suffice for your intended purpose.

The SPS will come in the tupperware stock.

-The B&C and bedding block will help secure the action into the stock
-Either cal should have at least a 300 MPBR, so you will not have to dial for 250.
-Either donor barreled action should be reasonably priced.

Accuracy will depend on the type of ammo you use and of course your skill. Still, at 250 Y you will be good with 2moa (not to say thats what you want)

If you heart is set on a Remmy, then definitely get one. The 7mm-08 will have more punch and the 162 Amax is one awesome bullet.

Now that is all said, have you considered the Tikka T3?

Excellent accuracy and trigger
Weighs about 7-7.5 scoped
detachable mag
Stock is sturdy and does not "need" to be replaced.
Smooth action

If you have a Sportsmans Warehouse, stop by and give them a look.

I'll look at a Tikka......

I have a pretty high end tactical bolt gun but at 12 pounds it is just a heap to haul up a tree all the time.

The 7mm-08 is my choice and the factory stock will be replaced I just did not know after the stock with the bedding block how accurate the gun will shoot....

Thnaks,

One of my first centerfire rifles was a sporter weight 270… not the sps, long before those were out. I had a wood stock on it and 200y 3 shot groups in the 1.5-2” range was the norm. The 223 sps ADL I made a load for a friend’s 13 year old to hunt deer with would hold around 1-1.5” at 100y once it warmed up… with definite and continued impact shift until about the 4th or 5th shot when in the factory stock, it moved around 2.5-3” during those first few shots unless you let it cool for 7 minutes or so between every shot. The stock was designed to touch the barrel on this rifle as it had pads near the end of the forarm to help center the barrel in the channel and remove the slight list in the stocks forarm. So there was most definitely some stress that stock was imparting to the rifle’s barrel.

This side of 300, I think you would be fine with a restocked rifle. And who knows, you may end up with a great one that shots well and could extend that out a few more…. But I am sure it would be at least minute of deer at 300.

My 24" s/s w/HS stock shoots in the 4s @100yds for 5 shoots.
