I have a Lee crimp die for .308, Lee states that it helps maintain a proper crimp for consistant velocity. Does anybody use it for paper punching?

Personally I don't know any benchrest shooters that crimp anything. The only things I crimp are for hard recoiling gas guns. The bullet can get jammed into the case either with hard recoil while they are in the magazine, or from hard cycling to chamber the round.
Actually I have seen bullets slightly pulled and others compressed on different types of rifles.

I can't tell you from experience, since I don't crimp my rifle loads, but it just doesn't seem right to squish a rifle bullet in a load that you are trying to get as precise as possible. I can see getting a consistent start pressure, but I would think that consistent neck tension would suffice. I can't say as I have heard of guys using the Lee die in their precision long-range loads either.

Tried it as an accuracy aid. Ended up just trading some issues for other ones. It has <span style="font-style: italic">some</span> genuine value in ammo being used with semis, which subject seated bullets to some extraordinary punishment.

The only accuracy advantage I found with crimping was with 45 Colt loads.
I've loaded for a number of semis (223, 308, 30/06, 7.62X39 and 458 SOCOM) and don't/didn't crimp for any of them.
