I have a GAP Hospitaller 24" bbl. Varget pushes a 155gr. Scenar for an average of 2889 fps. I haven't tried any other loads. As good as this load shoots there is no reason to look any farther. Semper Fi
3050 in a 24inch Rock, HbN coating made that possible, lapua brass was toast after 4-5 reloads, 46.2 RL15 or 46.0 IMR4895(winter time only), CCI primers, Fed 210 are 50fps slower in my stick, and not as accurite.
When shooting RL 15 46.1 2950fps chamber a modified Palma 95anneal 24" barrel every 4th firing, tap primer pockets back Hart primer reformer, resize min. about 20 times reloaded with some losses if they look bad tossed about 10%. Same caution as above RL 15 in summer, jack up over 3000 fps but primer leaks and enlarged pockets.
Now IMR 8202 xbr 2920 fps 22" barrel no primer pocket issues does not work brass hard low es sd temp stable only have 10 loads so far no problems. In 24" AI over 2950 fps same no problems. Friends 27" he can run over 3000fps if he wants to. ImR 8208 has made thing alot better. PS he just emailed me in .223 Bolt gun 80 Gr 3050 fps held 10" 10 rds at 1000 yds today 8 mph wind.We will shoot a match this Sunday me at a 1000yds 155L him .223 80gr
Just checking is that is the Norm. that sounds about right to what i see in mine. I am running 27.5 " barrel with easy 3020 fps.. I am seeing 'some' of the brass starting to loosen pockets @ 4th firing .I anneal @ the 5th firing but have been just setting aside the loose pockets as they accumulate, So looks like I will be picking-up the Hart pocket reformer tool pretty soon. . edit to add: The way the primer pockets are getting abused, It's a waist of good brass . I got a shitload of LC, FC & Win. brass I will be using on the next barrel set-back for sure. I really Don't Think I should be even using my good Lapua brass for the 155's and just save them for my other .308 . .
That's that sounds like a good way to do it if you are going to stay with RL and Varget, running a little under helps a little 2950fps or so. Learning curve with the Hart tool, tip I use a dab of Imperal wax on tool to svoid sticking, tumble to remove that and resize lube after that then reprime.
If you give the IMR 8208xbr I thing you would be very happy you did. I sold or gave away all Varget and RL15 and I had over 24 LBs of each.
I've gotten 3400 fps from them out of my 300 RUM, with only a light load of 92gr Retumbo, Max load for that in the RUM is around 100-102 gr I believe. Only loaded up ten rounds of those and the one 5 shot group I had was 4 shots inside a 1/4", then the idiot behind the trigger pulled the last one to open it up to about 1.25"
In my 30" tight bores, single shot long throated( Normal Rock 5r and Bartlein Tight bores) I get 3050-3150 depending on load. The Rock will get over 3100 easily but to me the rounds seems most accurate at 3020 fps That is with H4895 for fastest and Varget for consistentcy
For mag length In 22" 5Rs I get 2900-2950 with H4895
In 20" 5Rs I get just under 2900fps with H4895.
I am working with N540 and N550 right now and see some good signs but too early to say anything
A ridiculously good shot at my club (he was invited to shoot on the US Palma Team) loads them HOT, getting around 3000 fps from a 30 inch palma gun. Apparently, he loads so much Varget into the case that it compresses it enough to have to require scooping it out of the case with a paper clip if he has to pull the bullet for some reason. And he still has all his fingers...
