Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

Re: Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

I only target shoot, but mine loves the CCI TNT hollow points. They're the only ones that won't walk on me down here in FL when the barrel heats up. Varmint Al tested the Winchester V-Max, which mine realy liked up north. He found it to be the most accurate.

Re: Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

I use Winchester vmax in my savage btvs, and it has shown to be the most accurate. The hornady and cci are probably the second most accurate, but it hates the 20gr stuff.

Re: Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

My remington 504T .17hmr shoots Remington .17 hmr the best but it is kinds higher priced then most. But it is boat tailed so I think its worth the extra few $$ As for fur and meat frendly rounds I know CCI makes 20 grain fmj rounds. If im going to eat it I usally just go for a headshot which is pretty easy with a .17hmr under 100yds. midwayusa.com has a very good selection of .17hmr ammo if you can't find much in your area.

Re: Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

All 17HMR is made by CCI. The only difference between them is the bullet used. All ballistic tip 17HMR ammo is the same. You might experience variation from lot to lot, but that is lot to lot variation, which is different from brand variation. The next time you buy ammo, if the lot is different and the brand is the same, it will shoot differently.

For me, ballistic tip is more accurate. I am surprised to hear that the hollow point is more accurate, because the difference is so apparent in my gun... but each gun is different. I have heard of others having luck with the FMJ's, but they don't shoot great in mine.

Re: Favorite 17 hmr ammo?

^ Yeah I didn't notice any change in accuracy when I switched over to the CCI hollow points. For some reason they just handle the heat better. I've tried Hornady, CCI, and Winchester ballistic tip ammo down here and the all start to walk for some reason. Could just be my own barrel. I dunno.

I get my ammo from AmmunitionToGo.com. Their prices are really decent and they ship fast.
