Favorite AR-15 .223 load

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

Just now workin mine up. I've had great luck with 24gr Varget, 77 + 80 grain bullets. The 80's have to be single fed cause of length. The 77's fit in the magazine fine OAL. 2.260. I'm shooting a 20" 1-8 twist Rock River. I'm about to experiment with 70gr Barnes Triple Shock and the Swift Sirroco 72gr for deer and pig hunting. Good luck with your new quest. Don't worry about asking questions here. Some guys lose patients with newbie questions, someday you will too. Just don't ask how to clean your gun!!!!!

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

I'm a cheap bastard, so I like a M193 bullet with 25 grains if H335. I have loaded up to 28 grains or so before, but you start to see pressure. 25 grains shoots fine.

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

For cheap plinking, I like the Hornady 55 GR FMJ with 25.5 GR of TAC, 24.5 GR of Xterminator, 24.5 GR of Benchmark, and the most accurate load was with 23 GR of H322.

Also, 22 GR of H322 with the 75/77 GR bullets were very accurate.

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

Hornady 55 Gr FMJ, LC 08 & 09 (trimmed to 1.75), Rem 7 1/2 primers, w/ 24.8 of H335 works great on my 1:7 16" barrel. Powder seems to burn pretty clean.
Now if I can only find more H335.

Sierra 77 SMK w/ 25grains of Varget, LC brass (trimmed to 1.75), rem 7 1/2 primers, and seated 2.260 (mag length). sub MOA out of my 1:8 18" SPR MK12 mod 0. around 2700 fps. WORK YOUR LOAD UP!!!

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

For my competition gun, I use the following:
-Any once fired brass (mostly LC)
-Sierra .224 69gr Matchking bullet
-Varget powder 24.0gr
-Fed 210M primers

Respectable velocities and very accurate with a button rifled 1:8 twist barrel.

Re: Favorite AR-15 .223 load

Paulosantos,

I've been working up a plinking/training load similar to yours using:

55grFMJ (Widener's "mil spec")
CCI#41 primers
25.5gr TAC
PMC cases (headstamp ".223" but primers were crimped).

I chronographed this load in three different 16" AR's and it seems to be a little faster than average ".223 REM" and a little slower than Q3131A 5.56. I know it is over the published .223 load, but probably still under 5.56 pressures. Accuracy is decent (1-2 MOA). The average vel for the three 16" AR's was 3000fps +/-20fps (depending on the gun).

Have you seen any pressure variations when using different cases, etc. I'm about to migrate over to LC brass and Wolf ".223" primers (they were available). Have not had a chance to chrono this combo yet.

When weighing individual cases, the PMC is very close to the LC (multiple years) I've weighed so I think the change in case won't make any real difference. I've seen primers AND/OR cases cause over a 100fps difference in otherwise the same load in the same gun on the same day.

Any thoughts?
