Thanks, I also heard they are using 175 federal gold match, can anyone confirm?

Re: FBI 308

I know you inquired about the FBI, but many of the local SWAT type units in the Northwest are going away from the Federal GMM and switching to some of the tactical loads like TAP, Tac Bond and so on.

The Federal GMM is sort of the gold standard for accuracy testing, but isn't so great for predictable penetration (overpenetration?) and behavior through various common items a marksman might have to shoot through...glass, thin door, clothing, and so on.

Re: FBI 308

Match ammo has really thin jackets and is almost a lawsuit waiting to happen. It is also not consistent when hitting a target I have seen guys blown apart to a clean shot. I am sure velocity has a big aspect in that as well.

Re: FBI 308

Have a couple of I have crossed paths with and they have stated
factory 168 federal gold metal match for most shooting and practice. Another guy said a bonded tactical that mimics the trajectory of the gmm but I didnt pay attention to which as I always handload.

Re: FBI 308

I'm not to worried about the external balistics of the rounds they use. I was only inquiring do to my gunsmith mentioning that his 308 reamer was the same on that the FBI uses. Just checking to see if it would fit my round.

Re: FBI 308

Our contract for 308 is still Federal and there are no signs of any changes to Hornady or Black Hills. (Those are the only two considered) The chambers all accept a 1.633 Match gauge, and nothing higher at the moment, so the initial cut is obviously precise.
The recent Winchester contract for 5.56 has guys looking for Win 308, however Win does not have a 308 Match round. They simply box up some hunting ammo in their Supreme line and sell it as Match-like.
The Sierra BTHP overpenetrates and the attitude from Federal is "as long as you guys are buying it, we will load it...."
Hopefully a Hornady contract will surface as their A-Max round in the TAP line is much better on Humans, with their Barrier rounds just as good as the federal TBBC.
