What is the feasibility of honing a Taurus Raging Judge Magnum cylinder to fit the 460 S&W Magnum cartridge? The cylinder of the Taurus, 3 1/16" lenght, loads the 454 Casull, 45LC and 410 gauge. The bullet diameter of the 454 Casull, 45LC and 460 mag are .452 precisely. The case diameter of the 454 Casull is .480 and the case diameter of the 460 is .478. When the 460 cartridge is dropped into the cylinder it sticks out by 7/16" inch. This being since Taurus tapered the cylinder at this point. If the cylinder was honed approximately .026 (.478-case diameter minus .452 bullet diameter)for a distance of 7/16" this would appear to solve the problem. Although the chamber pressure of the 460 is greater than the 454 Casull but not significant enough in my humble opinion (I am definitely not an expert, more like an amateur at best). Other than voiding the warranty any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Feasability of 460 s&w mag cartridge out of Taurus

i had a taurus 45 lc this was the old single six the cylinder blew up and snapped the back strap off of it. on box ammo

taurus in my book is a good gun but i wouldn't do anything with it that would raise the pressures on their cylinders. but some one else here might say its ok, i wouldn't do it. save your $$ and buy the gun already chambered for your round.

hand guns not as forgiving that long guns

my .02$

Re: Feasability of 460 s&w mag cartridge out of Taurus

Thanks for the input. Looking very hard for the S&W 460 ES revolver w/ 2 3/4"bbl. Smith stopped making them several years back. It appears after extensive searching cannot find one. I just thought that I could make this modification to my Taurus 3" bbl.and have it all in one revolver. If you by chance see this model 460ES for sale would appreciate a reply. Once again thanks.

Thanks for the input. Looking for the S&W 460 ES model w/ 2 3/4" bbl. Hard to come by. If you run across an ad with one for sale pls. pass it on.

Re: Feasability of 460 s&w mag cartridge out of Taurus

.454 Casull is no slouch. I'm not even sure I'd want to shoot .454 out of a Taurus. Taurus isn't exactly known for quality and the .460 S&W cartridge is no joke.

The judge is a compromise of suck---the cylinder and frame are too weak for full power .45 colt loads, and the rifled bore defeats the point of shooting .410ga out of it. If it won't reliably hold up to hot .45 Colt loads, trying to run .460 S&W would be a spectacle to behold. If you do it, remember to get video when you touch off that first .460 Mag.

Got any examples of frame weakness for sanctioned loads from the judge, 3 punkin balls loaded with hot pistol powder out of a .410 shell make a lasting impression and that's over the counter load for the judge. The Taurus guns are not poor by any means unless you think the S&W internals were also a poor design. It may be even better built than its father and why should it hold up to hot .45 loads neither will a Smith or Colt old or new Your in Ruger Country for a .460

Kinda mirrors my thoughts. Even .454 is no joke, though.
