I understand the concept behind mounting a scope with feeler gauges, now just getting ready to try it for the first time. Only question is how big of a feeler gauge do you need? How many blades? Thanks in advance.

NF 3.5x15x50 30 mm tube

Low rings

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

my advice is go to Auto Zone, NAPA, or somewhere of the likes and buy a feeler gauge set. They are cheap and will have more than enough blades to get you through it. Can say off the top of my head but my feeler gauge set is no more than 3/4 inches with all the blades and the little protective "shield" over it

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

Also avoid using the brass blades use the chrome plated ones. Some sets have both. If your set has both try to find a combo of blades that doesn't use the brass blades or has at least one chrome blade on the top and the bottom. After I marked up the bottom of mu first scope I went to Autozone (I think) and bought a set that was all chrome (or at least silver. The brass blades will leave marks on the bottom of the scope and the top of the rail. Just my experience.

Put your rings on the base, sit the scope in the rings, take a look at how much space you have between the turret housing and the base. Surprise surprise, that's about how much feeler gauge you need.

If for some reason this is impossible for you, I'll say that I have an EVEN CHEAPER gauge bought from AutoZone than deadly, it's only about 3/8" thick in total and it has always been plenty for low or medium rings. Remember to put a drop of oil on it before you store though, those cheap ones rust up quick and that'll leave a brown smear on your scope and base next time.

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

For you OCD types, you can take that total measurement, go to a machinist and have them machine you a piece of metal to those specs. Then when you have to remove your scope it will be a simple matter of using your new tool to level your scope.

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

I use a piece if aluminum square stock that is .250X 4", and use that to take up the majority of the empty space, then you can work up the the right amount of feeler gauges. Also Whiteside Router bit company has a kit with a bunch of brass bars for like 15$ if I recall correctly. JPG

Plastic playing cards work very well.

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

I am still shocked that some scope and ring makers dont simply get together and machine in an index mark on the scope tube that matches up with an indentation on one of the rings. Guess there is too much variance in bases and receivers?

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

A friend of mine has a feeler gauge set up that just uses 2 pieces of metal that are triangular shaped that you run against each other and itI gives you the right height and is always squared. But I can't find it anywhere. I bet a machinest could make one easy though

Re: Feeler gauge and scope mounting

Feeler gauges are not chrome plated, and they don't rust because they are cheap. They are normally made of uncoated spring steel, and steel rusts.

Oil is your friend.

We mounted three Night force scopes on two Sr-25's and a Larue OBR using Impact Data book cards. Had taken my feeler gauge out of my range box.

A good idea if the tolerances are good enough. $75 for the set.

That's a cool little gadget. Interestingly enough, the kit also comes with feeler gauges as well.
