Has anyone tried the [invisible fence] from Tractor Supply? The way I understander it,you set the distance into the box and when the dog gets to close it zapps the dog.We have a bad ass pug that likes to grab the back pants legs. The cops have been to house 2 times now.He has never actualy bitten anyone, but it might be comeing. After the wife ran over the weenie dog he went crazy.W

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

not to be an ass, but your pug will someday come out and mess with the wrong guy. Then your going to be pugless, become a responsible pet owner and do what you have to do before some else fix your problem.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

I wanted to put a bullet in him the first time. It's my daughters dog and sleeps with her everynight. The wife talked me out me out of it.Just wanting to know if anyone has used this system. The invisible fence is fairly expensive.Tractor Supply has one for around $300.If I can't find a reasonable solution I'll have to send him to doggy heaven.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

Aversive conditioning may help
Would U consider using a training (shock) collar on him ..
then set him up to bite someones trousercuff and zap him.

That may stop his bad habit...Aversive conditioning tells U what NOT to do, and by that it is effective.

I have an invisible fence and yes it is expensive, but my 5 dogs never got more than a single shock during training and never thereafter challenged the invisible fence.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

If you haven't cut his balls off yet that may take some of the steam out of him as well. We used the invincible fence and it works well. I honestly have not had it on in a couple of years. The dogs got shocked a couple of times and they won't leave the yard without me.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

The in ground electric fence can and does work, with most dogs. However, there are some, as well as some hogs I've seen, that start whining or squealing a good 25 ft. before they run right through the "fence". Even if he obeys the boundaries of your yard he will still victimize individuals within it. Denutting usually tones em down some. A shock collar, while he is in the act, would probably be more effective than the fence. If you have friends that are bird doggers or houndsman, you could probably borrow one. If not, the BB gun has been known to work wonders too.

There are two types.
1. You bury a wire and if the dog crosses it, he gets zapped.

2. You have a broadcaster that zaps the dog if he gets too far from the base station.

I have the second type, I recommend the first type. It would be nice to let the dog run exactly where I want to and keep it out of the flowerbeds, and garden. Damn dog is digging up my landscaping. With the wire, you have a lot more control of exactly where the dog can go, and for an in town lot, you can bury it right to the property lines, or wherever. If you have a long narrow lot, the dog will only get to hang out in the middle if you do the first type.

Be advised you still have to train the dog as to what is going on, and when the batteries in the collar go dead, they will eventually catch on to it, although my dog takes a few weeks.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

I have five acres that have an underground radio fence....do yourself a favor now and spend the extra coin for wire that is designed for underground sprinkler systems. The cheap shit that comes with the the kit, fails in a year or so. Additionally, make a map that shows where each and every splice in the underground wire is. If the fence fails, the splices are the most prone to be where the issue is. A crodless drill works wonders to cancel out the signal (twist the wires together to create "dead-zones." I have a lab that could careless about the fence, and a miniture pinscher that will not even get close to the boundry. I later did buy a correction collar that could give a tone as an option (for when we are at the boat). I only have to hit the tone for the min-pin to stop on a dead-out run.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

Thanks for input. The dog has been cut.We have been talking about spending the money and getting a good system. My main concern is that he will take off hauling ass,and run right through it,as stated above. Will it shock him as in knocking him down,or just sting him?Is it adjustable how hard it hits him?He is pretty tough. He's been hit by cars 3 times.I'm going to borrow a shock collar and get a buddy to play the bait, and go from there. Thanks,Alan

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

Here is the one thing that always kept me from doing the underground fence system......it keeps your dog in the yard but not people or other animals from coming into your yard. In most places even if your dog is on your property and bites someone you can still be held liable. Conditioning your dog to not bite pant legs and to stay in the yard utilizing a training caller may be the better route. I have bird dogs and while they are in a fenced yard (1/4 acre) I let them out to run every other day. My German Shorthair likes to run a bit further than I want him to unless I put a shock collar on him. He behaves totally different just knowing that caller is around his neck.

Price of underground fence $300
Price of training collar $150
Price of dog biting someone$???
Price of .22 round $.02

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

If I can keep him in the yard that would be the optimal solution. We don't live in town, but there are 3 houses around us.We have signs in our yard and driveway. He won't let anyone around the kids he doesn't know. The problem is he was going with the kids to the neighbors to play and did not know the people he grabbed. He is very pretective of the kids.We keep him chained or in the house if we aren't outside with him now.So 1 keep him in yard. 2 get a buddy to play bait in the yard next door and shock the shit out of him.I hope this wiil work, because I don't want to tell my daughter Frank had to go to Heaven.Alan

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

The invisible fence works great on our 80# Weimereimer. A dog we used to own, a 65# doberman learned the juice was worth the squeeze and would take the hit for things of great interest on hte other side of the flag.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

My old Weimaraner/Lab used to take the hit and run through the underground/invisible fence if he had something to chase.

It took a 4 foot field fence to slow him down enough to make the pain sustained. After that he was good until he figured out when the batteries were dead. Then he would climb/jump the fence.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

If you don't have land. Get a run for the dog. I have the Invisible Fence Brand covering 20 acres. Currently there are eight dogs on the collars. The Cane Corso and the Rottie have two boxes on their collars.

My system is 10 years old and works great. I make my own batteries, cost $1.50 instead of $10. The first two collars cost $150-200, from Invisible Fence. Then I got smart and bought on E-bay. Then I cried, I could have bought the same system for $500 ( plus self install) instead of the $4,000 installed.

The BAD:

a) Invisible fences may keep your dog, cow, horse or kid from getting out, it stops nothing from getting in!

b) Some breeds need more boxes or studs added to the collars.

c) Battery life, dogs learn how to run it out.

d) If the dog gets bumped out of the fence (or runs through it) it will get zapped trying to come back. You come home to find the dog outside the fence crying to get back in. (Happens)

e) COST!

Good:

a) After the animal is trained it works great in any weather

b) Battery back up on the fence. Mine worked seven days on the back up.

c) Keeps people in their car if the come up the drive

Some dogs only need to be zapped once. Others, will test the fence every time they go out. One of my Bullies needed three boxes on his collar. Till the day he died, he would go through the fence to get a cat or to be with or petted by his boy.

One dog, get a kennel. A 10x10 runs about $125 at the tractor store.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

Grabbing a pant leg is one thing, biting a child's face is another. I am not sure about where you live, but in TN there is(or was) a "one-bite" rule: if your dog bit someone once, you were clear of liability. The second time, it was all over but writing the check.

I am not sure, but I think that the rule may have given way to other legislation that is more restrictive on the pet owner. Also, if you know or should know the dog is vicious or a biter, the one-bite does not apply.

I am a dog lover and have 2 that came from a pound and one from a junkyard. They are lovers and not biters. When they die it is going to be rough. But despite loving dogs, I will not have a 75# liability running in my yard.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

Been looking into these myself - my understanding is that training is key - dedicate a solid weekend, and include positive reinforcement (praise/treats for stopping before fence) along with the negative aversion (shocks when line is crossed). Some companies will outright put on their packaging "this product is not recommended for aggressive breeds or protective guard dogs".

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

I just bought the wireless version and it works. I have a had a problem with our mutt trying to wonder and she likes to bark at anything that moves. She is inquisitive and she was abused before so she is skittish and like to bark.

If I had to do it again I would have gotten the wired version. She is my little helper when I am working in the yard and I have enough property to not be covered by her base station so we take her collar off. if I had the wired version I could have plenty of range. But when we have to leave her home it works awesome, she knows when her collar starts beeping before the shock she had to move closer to the house.

Re: Fenceless collar for your dog

I have one of these for my German Shorthair: http://www.petsafe.net/Products/Fencing/Wireless-Fences/Wireless-Containment-System.aspx

Works great. The only time he has broken through it is when the collar batteries are low, or the one time I might have egged him on a little to chase a cat. Other than that, it works great and covers almost all of my lawn.

However, having said that, I think if I were to do it again I would get the in-ground wire kind, that way you can choose which area's you want your dog to go, and keep him out of other areas in the same yard. The wireless one he has full access to everything in that zone.

Easy to train them to use it. Pieces of hotdog near the zone, in the zone and past the zone. Unless he's pretty dumb, he'll have it figured out quick where the zone is at and what that beeping noise means.
