Hey all, sad news i noticed today. I haven't shot my rifles in about a month or so due to no time, being over worked and under-paid is a bitch. So i'm finally able to go tomorrow with a few friends, and decided to give the rifles a once-over. I usually never really clean my guns until I notice a drop-off in accuracy, but i checked anyway since they've been packed up for a while.

Welp, i noticed towards the muzzle of my SPS-V there were a few spots of surface rust in the bore! Needless to say, i had a mini-freak out, cleaned both guns for about 2 hours. My AAC was perfectly fine from the get-go, but the SPS still seems to have a slightly darkened/off color patch or two where the rust was.

Is this rifle's accuracy screwed now??? It's nice and smooth now, but the spots concern me. Any input?

living in socal, I've definitely dropped the ball a few times on proper care, one quite recently and found some in one of my rifles,a stock 700 police, and after boresnaking and lubing the first group out of the gun was sub .5 moa, and I shot the best score yet in a practice f t/r relay. I wouldn't worry about it, I've seen bores even worse than mine go unaffected after some heavy rusting.

Re: Few light spots of rust in bore, am i screwed?

Clean as usual, and just don't do anything excessive that may do more harm than good.

Rust evolves into pits after firing and cleaning. If my bores are an example they seldom have any effect on accuracy. Once it's there, it's there, but it's what happens afterward that you can actually do something about.

I would be more concerned with rust the nearer it gets to the muzzle, but basically, clean it, shoot it, and take better care to prevent corrosion. This means that you need to apply a moisture barrier in the bore, i.e., a decent gun oil.

I guess I have lucked out of the years (minus me newest .308 build). I would clean my guns and never put a patch of oil down the barrel. but i am in AZ. Hell, I took my camaro down to bare metal and "life happened" and it sat for 5 years and the only palces where rust showed up was where I have put my hands or a can of soda. It was just light surface rust, and a 400 grit sand paper took it off in a few swipes. maybe 1 day ill get around to getting paint on it

Where've I seen this before? Will someone remove this troll?

Re: Few light spots of rust in bore, am i screwed?

I wouldn't worry about it. If you do end up putting an oil or anything in your barrel make sure you remove it before you shoot though. I've never had anything that the first couple rounds haven't taken care of.

Re: Few light spots of rust in bore, am i screwed?

I had several guns that rusted pretty badly after a house fire ( metal got hot and when the Fire Department mist sprayed the interior of the house they flash rusted ), and after a thorough cleaning and some Flitz polishing, the bores did not copper foul any more than they had prior to the rusting. I kinda figured the Flitz polishing had the most to do with it. Not too sure, but I was happy with the result(s).

Re: Few light spots of rust in bore, am i screwed?

What's the deal with Flitz? It's available at my local place but i never really looked into it. I've noticed the copper fouling in my barrel builds up pretty fast (both of my remmy barrels)

Would it be a good idea to use the bore paste to cut down on this?

Re: Few light spots of rust in bore, am i screwed?

I'ld stay away from anything like that in my barrel. Your copper fouling actually gives you accuracy by smoothing out the imperfections in your barrel. The only thing I'ld worry about removing is the carbon. Seriously you don't want to wear out your barrel from cleaning it. Wear it out by shooting it out.
