Not sure were to post this but do I have to enclose the recieving dealers FFL in the box when shipping a gun to them? They told me I just have to enclose a copy of my Drivers licence and mail it to them??? Thanks, Wayne

Re: FFL Shipping

Some FFL dealers will allow private party transfers, others will only accept firearms from another FFL. If the firearm is not transfering ownership you can ship it directly to them, although many companies (UPS/FedEx) will want it to be FFL to FFL. I have shipped rifles directly to a gunsmith and they have shipped it directly to my door, but again its not transfering ownership.

No, you keep their FFL for your records. You have to send them your DL so they can log in the firearm and use your ID as proof that is who they got it from in their A&D book. No reason for you to send their FFL back to them.

I don't know about fedex's policies, but that is definitely not true of UPS.

The only thing UPS requires when shipping a rifle is that the address it is shipping to matches the address on the FFL that you show them. (you also have to ship it with an adult signature required upon delivery) And they require handguns to ship 2nd day air.

I've also shipped a rifle to a smith right from one of their (UPS) hubs (got it back on my doorstep too). Disclosed and insured as such, but with no discernible markings on the outside to let anyone know it is a rifle.

Re: FFL Shipping

I'm still a little confused? I can ship to them with just my Drivers licence enclosed then they do the transfer with the new buyer, Correct? Do I have to tell them ( UPS or FEDEX ) what I'm shipping? Do I need the Bussinesses FFL # in my posession as they didn't give it to me? They just gave me their mailing address, took buyers & sellers names and said enclose a copy of my Drivers Licence and send it. Thanks, Wayne

Re: FFL Shipping

muleman, you have to have a copy of the FFL dealers lic. that you are shipping the rifle too (you keep the copy,as its only to show the shipper that you are sending the rifle to a dealer),the only thing you put in the box with the gun,is a copy of your drivers lic. nothing else, except for maybe who you are actually selling the gun too (buyers name)its that simple.Make sure you keep the copy of the FFL that the dealer sent you for your records.

Re: FFL Shipping

Technically, you dont have to have a copy of the license if you are not a FFL. If youre a nonFFL, you can get the first 3 and last 5 of the FFLs number, run it on FFLezcheck, print that page and you have what you need as that info matches the FFL. Only FFLs have to have a file copy of the other FFLs license. Fine distinction but important as some FFLs will not give a nonFFL a copy of their license.
