Guys, I spent quite some time today reading through the Optics FAQs, but am looking for your opinions on a more specific question.

I'm possibly in the market for a new scope, well I am in market, but not sure when the purchase will be made. I'm looking at either the FFP Mark 4 of SFP Nightforce. These scopes are at the top end of what I want to spend.

Question is, does the better glass of the SFP NF trumpt the fact that the Mark 4 is FFP?

Scope applications will be for huting deer and coyotes on the prairie of ND, as well as mid to (eventually) longer range shooting, but I got aways to go for that. I'm also undecided if I want Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA, but that's another discussion, which is basically a coin flip at this time IMO. I realize the Leupold is not available in MOA/MOA. I do like their TMR reticle. As far as the NF reticles, or etched reticles in general, I have no experience with them. My concern with them, and maybe it's no reason for concern, is the etched reticle of the NF's would be pretty piss poor during low light hunting conditions. Thoughts???

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Adam

Re: FFP Mark 4 vs SFP Nightforce

OK, in my opinion, FFP is over played. For me, it is not a deal maker nor breaker. It is a nice option to have, but I prefer a SFP over an FFP because I like the sight picture better at low magnification. But to answer your question, given the choice between FFP Leupold and SFP NF, it is a no brainer for me; NF takes the cake. I think it is a superior product, and I don't think Leupold delivers for the price. If the MK4 was priced at like $800, then the better value is the Mk4, but this is not the case.

With NF, you can go NP-R1 or R2 with MOA dials, or MLR with mil dials. Neither choice is advantageous over the other, it is all a matter of personal preference; what your eyes like the best.

I say NF budd. Got 5 of em. I could buy lupey if I wanted to. My buddies have em and I shoot em. But I like a NF with a NP-R1 with MOA adjustments. And now they have high speed turrets. You can get em 1/8,1/4,1/2,or1MOA on the NXS. Thats what I'm gonna do. Probably in the 1/4 or 1/2 MOA.

Re: FFP Mark 4 vs SFP Nightforce

Shoot em both, you'll like the NF better.

Buddy of mine has the Leo. I USED to have them. He shot my USO, NF and Ziess, and bought an S&B next. One thing that sets apart the four brands we have, versus the Leopold, is the eye relief.

The MK requires your head in the precise position, very little room for error. One any of the others, there are a couple inches where you can get a full sight picture. And we all known what happens when you are shooting without a good picture.... results are not what you spent the bucks for in the first place.

buy once, cry once.....

Ha, I've been hearing that a lot lately....And I've also been warned, by a die hard Leupold fan, that the eye relief sucks on the Leupys. It's nice to be reminded of that again. That's a pretty big negative right there, IMO.

Thanks for the info so far guys.

Re: FFP Mark 4 vs SFP Nightforce

Before you get on to the brand, you mentioned FFP (or not)...

If you're hunting with this rifle, and your getting a reticle with graduations, then I strongly suggest you get FFP or else you're just wasting your time with the reticle. If not, then SFP is all you need to pay for, no need to waste money on FFP.

Also, get a scope with adjustments that match the reticle - MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL - it's soooo much more logical, faster to make corrections in the field, and it's gonna save you a bunch of mental calculations. In a perfect world every scope would be made that way... I Norwegian army sniper taught me the benefits of matching reticle to adjustments

Then, when you choose which ever scope you like best - IMHO you need to take into account the weight, as you don't want to carry a NF around hunting all day, and Leupold aren't that much lighter.

That's how I'd approach it.
