I have been recently looking into the vortex viper pst 4-16X50 and trying to decide on ffp or sfp. I am planning on shooting steel out to about 800yds. This would be my first ffp scope and the only thing keeping me from it is i guess i dont know how "large" the reticle is on max power. I still want to be able to do precision aming with this and not have it cover a large portion of what i am aiming at. Just looking for those with experience to inform me. If this has been covered else where i am sorry but all i could find is what the difference is between the two not what im looking for.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

STI,

I have had both SFP and FFP scopes. In regards to the Vortex PST, I would definetly go with the FFP, for the main reason that the reticle extends soo much further than the SFP reticle.

Generically speaking.....I have never had a problem performing precision shots with an FFP reticle. SSSamurai and myself were swapping hits on a 3" flapper in a 50% ISPSC torso at 600y at the beginning of this year.

I have also taken my HDMR H58 reticle to beyond 1760y on a 100% ISPSC target. I never once felt the reticle thickness was the reason that I was or was not making hits.

I suppose if my intentions were to be shooting eggs at 1000y, I would want the fine crosshair reticle, but I like to shoot steel, at extended ranges.

FFP scopes and reticles that I have used are Bushnell H58, Bushnell Mil-Dot, Vortex Razor EBR2, IOR MP8, Leupold TMR, just to name a few. If you are concerned with being able to perform surgical shots, you should consider something with an open center like the Leupy TMR, or center dot like the MP8.

Hope this helps,

Matt

I have some pics of some FFP reticles on targets I will see if I can dig up.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

Thanks this does seem to help. I was leaning toward ffp and now i am pretty sure i like the idea. If you could find some pictures that would be great. Thanks.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

The problem with FFP for hunting is not at the high end. At the low end, on some reticles, the reticle can be so fine that it disappears on a dark background. A scope with an illuminated reticle will sometimes overcome this depending on illumination intensity.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP from 374 meters, first at 16x then 4x. As you can see, at 4x the side bars give you a "pseudo German #4 reticle". It's a nice reticle design and I would definitely pick FFP over SFP.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

I recently started shooting with a FFP scope and I like it so much that I dont think Ill ever go back to sfp. My next scope purchase will be the vortex pst in 6-24 ffp

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

I guess it depends on what you are shooting, but if you are shooting even small steel or larger, go FFP. I will never go back, and got rid of my SFP stuff.

Being able to measure anything, anytime, (like even after I just watched my miss) declutters my brain and makes shooting more fun and faster.

I am curious, what type of optic is that? Never seen anything like it.

Re: FFP scope reticle question?

Like ta2, I recently decided to give FFP a try. I kept reading about how everyone likes it better, but was on the fence for a long time. Now I'm mad because it will cost me a fortune to go FFP on all my guns. Seriously, it makes everything so much easier you won't believe it.
