Filming Hits on Steel at Long Range...

Having watched a few You-Tube type videos showing steel being shot out past 800m, I was wondering what type of digital camcorders people are using, and with what zoom / magnification ranges???

I was looking at a Sony the other day and optical zoom went up to x78 and the camera wasn't much bigger than a couple of packs of smokes; technology really is amazing...

Sit it at the base of the target in a ziploc bag or pelican type case.

This sounds crazy, but I have had luck filiming with a little digital camera through my spotting scope. the quality is not the best, but it works.

I just use a simple Canon camcorder that cost about $400 and is about the size of a soft drink. I think it has 20x optical zoom. The point is a simple camera will film hits out to 800 yards.

My digital camera (Kodak Z612) has 10x optical zoom and does video. I can slap it on a spotting scope if I want, but that is a bit of a pain. I will be investing in an actual video camera with good optical zoom this year.

I would love a camera that I could activate at distance. I'd place the camera about 10 yards from the target and turn on when 700 yards out to film the hits (and misses).

I am surprised that nobody has come up with a gadget to do that. In fact for somebody that way inclined, it would be particularly difficult, just a RC servo meant for model aircraft activating a switch would be all thats needed....

There is a product available that meets your needs, I believe it's called the VG-01 Woman, the BD-07 small child, and the FA-42 friend.

Or if your if your training skills are up to it, BL-03 Black Lab. Note however Black labs are not always reliable for this task (watch background near the objective of the scope at the 28 second mark
