Range Report Finally got to a 1000 yards

Well 987 to be exact..... (sorry for the crappy pics, cellphone camera)

I know this isn't a big deal to many, but it's a first for me......

started at 750..... 3 hits for 3 shots (no wind to speak of)
repainted the plate and moved back...

987 yards....

17 hits for 30 shots... not great, but it's a start...

(wind started up, not bad stayed around 5 mph)
(12" x 12" plate)

Home built 308...
I trued the receiver.. (early rem 700)
spun on a rock barrel....
doesn't stand out at 100-200 yards, but groups great and is very repeatable at 400+ with Nosler 155 pills.
At this altitude (7000+) it's 9 mils dead on to a 1000

Good shooting. Kinda looks like 18 hits to me, looks like an edge hit down at the bottom left.

Well done. Out here in Hooterville, if I'm out to a 1000, I'm crossing property lines and the natives get restless. I'm jealous.

I'm already there....

just took a while to find a place far enough...
found one other place I think I can get 1180 with a good line of sight and pretty secluded.....
time to reload.....

The lower right looked more like I skipped a rock than a bullet strike.....
didn't want to claim a hit I wasn't sure of....

one great thing about New Mexico, lot's of public land....
in the spring we go north to Springer.... some local ranchers let us shoot p-dogs,
I think we could get to 1500 or so if we can hit them that far...

Nice job chpprguy! I know the feeling. Today at Zia here in ABQ, I hit 770 yds for my first time. Man what a feeling. It was a 12"x12" steel target and when I saw the splatter in my scope, I freaked out!!

I too love New Mexico. I found a spot down by Bernardo and I can get out to 1500 yards plus some. Which is good, cause I'm breaking in a .338 LM. I need the distance.

This is addictive!! I keep wanting to make further and further shots. And I see the difference in my hunting.

do they go to a 1000?
Any matches? I've been wanting to compete, seems like a good way to improve skills ....

No, Zia doesn't go any further than about 770yds, unfortunately. They do have a Precison Tactical Match every 3rd Sunday @ 0900. Not a member, no problemo, show up at the gate, tell someone that you want to shoot the match and have fun.

Your set-up is perfect and you'll need 60 rds, give or take. It is fun.

I'm not sure which is more difficult here in Missouri, trying to shot to 1000 yrds or finding a spot to long enough. I've had the pleasure of hitting the 800 yrd steel. Can't wait to try again at 1000. Nice shooting. Looks like you have a nice set up as well.

Nicely done! 1000y is addictive. I remember my first 1000y shot vividly, and that was over a year ago... cold bore shot at that.

My personal best is 1160y with 168gr SMK. I keep wanting to push it further, but haven't had the opportunity... I've switch over to 175 SMK and haven't had them past 950y... hopefully this spring.
