Hello and good evening everyone. I am very new to the hide and have enjoyed chatting so far. Today I am totally stoked to say that I finally got my new Remington sps sporter out today and shot it. I know that my gun is no m24 or great custom gun like some I have seen so far in these forums but I can definitely say confidently that this model 700 is a true diamond in the rough. Yes I am planning on a stock change very soon and a barrel upgrade, but honestly. Shooting this base model 700 and being my first bolt gun I have ever fired, I was totally happy. So here is my first range report. The gun fired today was a Remington 700 sps with the sporter 24" barrel chambered in .308. Ammunition used today was federal american eagle 168 grain fmj, and Hornady superformance 165 grain s.s.t cartridges. Weather was 28 degrees and shooting a 100 yard target. The first 20 rounds was the federal. I used this ammo to break both break in the barrel, and sight in, as well as trying for tight groups, and learning. I had my gun sighted in with the cabelas 3-12x scope that came with it. The gun sighted in using about 10 rounds. After using up the federal I opened the box of the Hornady s.s.t cartridges and ended up seeing a noticeable difference in accuracy potential in the rifle. I am an honest man, and a man of my word. Unfortunately I did not get pictures as at this range, they do not let you go out period. With the hornady rounds my best group was a 1" group of four rounds. I averaged about 1.5" groups. For my very first time I hope this is acceptable. I had a whole lot of fun today and can honestly tell you that I shot a total of 40 rounds and I cant believe how much I learned. I am officially addicted. I now understand why the best thing to do is to just get out there and shoot. Cause I learned more in 2 hours than I did in two months on the hide. Thanks for all the support guys. I look forward to having alot of fun with this rifle.

Not knowing how much shooting experience you have I don't know if this will help you or not but try to set up the target so that at the bottom of your breath when you are out of air in your lungs you are set dead on the target. So when you breath you should see the point of impact go below the target. Then as you breath out the cross hairs come up to the point of desired impact. Pull the trigger only when you cross hairs are on the target and only at the bottom of your breath. Make sure you hold the trigger still as you pull it if it doesn't break at the bottom of the breath.

This is how you are taught in the marines for breathing control and trigger control. I hope this was clear enough for you to get what I am saying as it's easier to show you. Get a snap cap and practice in your living room or garage with a small dot on the wall or a box or something. Do this and your groups will tighten up.

Good luck,
Merritt

Don't sell that rifle short. I have the 700 Tactical in .308 and .223 and both are very accurate out of the box. I had the triggers worked on, a Badger bolt knob installed and an HS Precision stock to replace the Hogue stock. The reason for the stock change is that the forearm on the Hogue seems to flex when using a bi-pod.

Try a box of Federal Gold Medal Match ammo in 168 gr, and Hornady A-Max match in 168 gr. I've had good luck with either of those ammos. Both my rifles are fitted with 20" barrels and I've shot the .308 at 700 and 800 yrds effectively. Using a ballistic program, I got first round hits at both those distances. Just because you haven't spent $3000 on the rifle, doesn't mean that you can't play with the big boys. Have fun and keep practising.

Glad to see you joined the shooters. A question I have is as the barrel heats from shooting do the groups point of impact shift? For ammo you might try different loads with 150-155 grain bullets. They will recoil a little less in that light rifle and will be accurate if you find match quality ammo and it agrees with your rifle. Good Luck

There is a long list of things that I want to do in the future with my shooting sessions and my rifle. I will be happy to keep you posted.
