Hi everyone,
Ive been a long time reader of these forums and have learned a lot from you all! The time has now come to start my first build and I was hoping I could get some suggestions/pointers on parts to use.

Just a little background on myself, Ive been a recreational shooter for a few years shooting a Remington 700 SPS tactical. Im comfortable and consistent shooting paper and steel out to 500 yards and would like to try and reach out to 1000 yards in the future. Been using Hornady Tap 168 grain, Nosler match 168 and Federal gold match 168 ammo.

So to start with, I was looking at using the Remington 700 XCR short action, 20" barrel that comes stock with the 1:12 twist. For a chassis system, I was looking into the Mcrees precision and JP Enterprises AMCS and shooting for a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 scope.

Does this sound like a good starting point or would anyone make different suggestions keeping within the same price ranges?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Whats wrong with the SPS you have? Do you want to keep that rifle as is or are you looking at buying another rifle because the sps is not up to the standard? I am assuming by the weights of bullets and twist your shooting 308? Why not have your SPS action trued and re barreled... maybe even refinished with cerakote and a new trigger. That way you are getting a way better rifle than a stock XCR and you can get a better twist like 1-11 for not much more than buying another rifle. At least that is what I would do.

That said too your SPS with good glass and stock will shoot to 1000 no problem.

Now if you want two separate rifles cause you want two then ignore what I am saying. I am also in no way an expert but in my humble opinion thats what I would do. Someone way more experienced than I will come soon for sure.

Thanks hangingchads! I should have clarified better. I have no problems with my SPS tactical, but i was going to turn it into my hunting gun and build my first long range "Sniper" type rifle. I obviously could do both with a single rifle, but who doesnt want more guns right :)

I do appreciate the thoughts!. I never thought about re barreling ect. Now you got me thinking!

Yeah I understand then that makes perfect since. As to what route to take thats going to be a numbers game. You could always try and pick up a 700 action and barrel it. Ive seen them go for under $400 then barrel your arount 800 or little less probably with a decent recoil lug and someone to chamber and mount a quality barrel. You can get it trued up at any point if you even wanted to.

Sorry didn't mean to give you more decisions to make ;)

I do however want to build something up in the AX chassis but its pricy.
